Solar ... In the news

As at 13:45 on 26th May according to Gridwatch Solar is at 8.76GW - but their needle dial only goes up to 8GW - guess we need to re-calibrate....

.... so adding in wind & embedded wind we're currently looking at somewhere just over 40% of UK demand ... probably some kind of new peak record being set which we'll read about in a day or two when someone catches up with the info-curve !

Here you go:-
Solar power breaks UK records thanks to sunny weatherNational Grid, which is tasked with ensuring a match between supply of and demand for electricity, said it was excited but unfazed by the challenge of accommodating “significant volumes” of renewables.
Duncan Burt, who manages day-to-day operation of the grid, said: “We have planned for these changes to the energy landscape and have the tools available to ensure we can balance supply and demand.”
Edit - And another pointing out that solar exceeded nuclear (briefly).
U.K. solar shatters generation record on year’s hottest dayWith the temperature reaching 29.5 degrees Celsius, solar panel installations across the U.K. generated a record amount of electricity on Friday, overtaking nuclear for the first time ever.
Some positivity to upset the naysayers.Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

....... news that might upset somebody?
Remember the argument that wealthier countries subsidising renewables would allow for poorer countries to deploy more renewables, and/or deploy them sooner, well:-
Coal cancellations and PV records mark India’s energy transformationAt least 13.7GW of planned coal-fired power plants have been cancelled in India this month, while solar prices have tumbled to new lows, showing that India’s energy transformation is in full swing, according to the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA).
Effectively, not only have the world wide FiT scheme(s) provided low carbon generation within the investing country, but the domino effect on prices has helped lead to an even larger world wide reduction in CO2 emissions ...... not too shabby since CO2 doesn't really care about national borders. :cool:Mart. I really didn't know if '8.7 gigawatts (GW) had been generated at lunchtime, representing 24.3% of total generation across the UK.' meant 8.7 GWh had been generated by lunchtime, or if the peak generation briefly hit 8.7 GW. Furthermore, it said 'In April, Britain went a full day without using coal to generate electricity for the first time since the 1880s.' Nothing in that article states it was the first working day, whereas the Guardian's does.0 -
Of solar is producing 20% on Sunday give me a shout0

This pic of Ferrybridge made me think of Cardew and the 'silly little' arrays that he talks about! They do look ridiculously small in comparison though, so very pleasing to see that solar is well on the way to replacing coal.0

Hiya KS. Yesterday the power peak briefly hit 8.73GW at 12.30pm, whilst the daily generation (energy) hit 73.5GWh.
BTW, around noon yesterday Germany hit 29.87GW.Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

Sadly, it's not just him, there are many folk on the forums now claiming that storage will never work, as it's currently too expensive, and there is too little of it.
Of course the same arguments were used against on-shore wind 10yrs ago, PV 5yrs ago, and off-shore wind quite recently.
When I read the storage comments I sometimes think to myself, that's just another pile of steaming Cardew, from folk that base a conclusion on today, rather than tomorrow (supported by trends from yesterday) .......
