Transferring contacts

Options
Hi,

I hope I'm not repeating old questions, I have done a search and nothing came up that worked for me.

I've just got an iPhone 5 and need to transfer my contacts from my old HTC desire. Is there an easy way to do this?

I rang O2 (about something else but asked this too) and the person there suggested using a website called easyphonesynch.com, but I looked at it and didn't understand how to do it, it seems to be just a load of links and I didn't know what was what. I found a thread on here which was about the same thing but different phones and it was suggested to bluetooth them across, but I can't get my phones to connect to each other via bluetooth. Currently only the HTC is connected to the network, apparently I need to back up my contacts online, then switch the network over to the new phone, then download my contacts..... did I at least understand that bit right?

I'm not very technically minded, can anyone recommend a really really simple way of doing it which doesn't involve going back to the shop and getting them to do it for me (because I can't get there until next Saturday and I want to use my new phone before then!!)?

I really do mean simply... with lots of easy to understand instructions!!

Thanks for any help!

can you not sync your contacts with gmail or outlook email? The way i do it is all my contacts are saved in gmail. On using a new phone i simply sign into gmail on the phone an import the contacts onto the phone.

I don't know, can I? I don't use outlook but do have a google account. I don't know how to do it but will go have a look. Thanks.

Edit: Have looked, but I can't see how I get my contacts from my HTC into google in the first place, let alone how to then get them from google into the new phone. Thanks though.

    [STRIKE]When in contacts use menu >> Import/Export.
I am sure both HTC and Iphone have this.[/STRIKE]

Ignore this. iPhone doesn't take memory cards.

    Google account offers: importing contacts:
We support importing CSV files from Outlook, Outlook Express, Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail, Eudora and some other apps. We also support importing vCard from apps like Apple Address Book.
I guess Apple have to offer something similar.
  • What's a CSV file?

Honestly, when I said simple I meant as in 'I know nothing'.

I've always just transferred sim cards before, and have only even kept contacts on my phone, never stored them or had to move them anywhere else. Luckily I've never lost my phone!!

I appreciate the help, I really do but I don't understand it!
  • ok.. the easiest way is to do it is to transfer your contacts from your HTC 'phone' memory, into the 'Google account' on your HTC phone

So, go into contacts on the HTC, press menu, and see if there is a 'copy' option. This should let you copy all the contacts into a certain account (e.g. phone, SIM, Google). Copy them to Google.

Now, if that works, you'll see all of them here: https://www.google.co.uk/contacts/

Did it work? If it did, set your iPhone up with the same google account and sync the contacts on it. This should bring them onto your iphone

I don't think that there is such option.
However, there is Settings >> Accounts and sync >> Manage accounts >> *****@gmail.com

Tick the box "Sync Contacts". The phone has to be connected to the internet obviously to be able to do this.
  • Well, i was hoping the Desire was similar to the Desire HD (which does have the option)

    ok, so i clicked:

People -> Menu button -> More -> Move contacts

And then it says 'Move contacts from' and lets you pick a 'to'

Sync contacts is pointless if the contacts are not stored against the google account

I have to say that I have CyanogenMod OS on my Desire and don't remember about the original OS.

I'd be surprised if iPhone doesn't offer any options for importing contacts from a CSV file.

Simple way if you have both phones working is to enable bluetooth on both then on the donor phone see if there is an option to select all contacts, then a 'copy' or 'send' option to bluetooth. Usually takes you to a bluetooth menu where you can look for other device nearby, select the new phone and send - on the new phone you may have to click on something to accept but that should be it.

Alternatively you may be able to text the contacts over as vcards.

In my OS there is "Share visible contacts" option in "Import/Export"
