FlameCloud, "immigrants" don't get social security. If by "immigrants" you mean "asylum seekers". And if they're granted asylum most studies indicate they invariably start work and don't claim anything. So let's knock that one on the head, eh ?
Listen I've got nothing but sympathy for the staff left in the DWP. Staff are leaving in droves, offices are being closed all over the place. The work is falling off the desks, their phones are red hot with irate customers and their (now un-screened) offices are queued out the door with disgruntled folks. DWP wages are crap, terms & conditions are being whittled away and morale is at rock bottom. I can't remember once when a senior Minister said that DWP staff were "valued" - they're always prattling on about teachers, nurses & the police instead. I'm glad I'm out the place even if it means signing on every fortnight in an office where I used to work. Everyone thinks it's taken years off me - I'm now me again and not this wild eyed & superstressed loon who used to stagger home every night.
Their customer service unit at payroll are now "urgently" looking into my case ... hope springs eternal, huh ? But I'm also reliably told that DWP hasn't paid national insurance contributions over to the Inland Revenue for thousands of their own staff ... and who are now being denied the very same benefits that they've helped administer over the years. You couldn't make it up.
Hey, Louise1521, let us know how you get on. Good luck !0 -

I don't think I could have put it any better myself zappsterToday myself and my H were covering 6 jobs, of varying levels from EO to S. And for the last 6 months there have only been 4 of us to do the same 6 jobs. Is it any wonder then when I left the office and called in at Argos to pick up a bookcase I had reserved online last night I walked out and left my car keys on the counter? Head severely up !!!! after yet another frazzled day.
You're WELL out of it - I only wish I could afford to walk - because believe me - I wouldn't hesitate.
Good luck mateI have no more money to give - all you companies out there - do your worst - I give in!!0
