Change of surname

There is absolutely NO need to pay any so called deed poll company to change your name.

The fancy piece of paper they give you has no more legality than a letter you type up yourself.

Various people such as doctors will not change the surname unless they have a deedpoll and it is done legally. I tried to do this prior to the deedpoll.

If you are reverting to your maiden name after divorce you do not need to pay, your maiden name has always been your name you just use it. Noone even asked for proof it was my maiden name they just changed it.

You have to have the childrens dad sign his permission to change the childrens names. My friend separated from her husband 14 years ago when her boys were 8 months and about 2 years and only got their 'dad' to sign the name change 2 years ago despite the fact he has never seen them since he left. They had been using her maiden name throughout school. She didn't pay to change their names either and they have passports/provisional license for the older one who is now 17.

I found this site which allows you to create your own deed poll for free. I think, for the sake of changing things like passports etc, i will fill this form in and get witnesses.

If i moved my kids current names (first/last) to be their middle names, are there any places (passports etc) that specifically ask for your middle names? and if so, are you legally obliged to reveal them?

Did your wife already take your name and change all her documents? If not perhaps one option would be for you all to take her name?

  • Can we start suggesting surnames yet or do you have one in mind?

Pick something foreign sounding, seem a bit more exotic, something like Diaz. Or something that not many people know what it means like Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)? :)

Seriously though. Maybe pick a family member you respect highly and use their name with 'son' chucked on the end like Scandinavians do.
  • I was under the impression that deed poll was a load of rubbish.

Always assumed you can call yourself whatever you like (as long as you answer to it on a permanent basis).

As for banks, doctors etc... I just assumed we are all assigned numbers (National Insurance, Account Number etc..)

I think I would call myself "Max Ferrari"

You're changing your middle name too? Why bother with this? You don't need to have a middle name so if you don't like your middle name then surely just stop using it instead of creating an entire new one?

Yes I think for driving & passport you would need the full name which if you're changing the entire thing shouldn't matter anyway?

All 'official' sources will want to know your full names including middle names.

Why are you changing everyone's first names though?

You're kids are 5, 8 & 10? Those are difficult ages to just say 'hey, let's all have new first names'. They will find it difficult and confusing to follow the new story... plus names are very important to children.

You chose those names so why suddenly do you need to change them? Surnames I can understand but the given names of your children? Is that fair to them?
