Long Hot Summer - Portable Air Conditioning Units

Just wondering, does a hose have to go through a window, or can it sit in a bucket? Obviously having a window open will counteract the effects of the cooling!0
-
The hose only expels hot air. The water is collected in the unit itself.
Althought the window will be open most come with a foam kit that will close up the gap allowing just the hose to pass through.

Thanks Nickp8, that's good to know0

The Eurolec unit mentioned at the start of this thread has a hose to expel hot air 1.4m long. It does not have an internal bucket to collect water from its dehumidifying function, instead it has a pipe which runs inside the hose which is 2.7m long and which could also pass out of a window or to a sink, there is no bucket to empty.
The unit does not come with a foam window kit, the end of the hose however slims to an 8cm wide oval, in theory you would only need to have your window open 8cm for the hose to blow hot air outside, but this depends on your style of window. It is worth adding that if you are handy with a Stanley blade you can use the polystyrene the unit was packed in to make a free window insert !
The unit uses a refrigerant called R410a made by Honeywell a huge American company. It is different to that used in cars and the system is designed not to require topping up.
The Global Cooling units are almost identical in spec to the Eurolec but considerably more pricey, I think you'll find they all use the same Sanyo compressor inside but have a different name, packaging and price.0 -
thanks I have opted for the 12000btu unit at £190 delivered should be here in a few days time"The time is always right to do what is right"0

Thanks mjr600 - that's very useful information. I think we'll definitely be making something up - our windows are huge. To have them open even such a small amount will counter the cooling.
For the first time in years, I'm really not feeling too bothered about summer approaching0 -
I've just ordered the 12000btu from 24electric too - lets hope this good weather holds out long enough for me to be able to test it prior to the 'normal' summer months!
It'll probably pee down the minute it arrives!
Thanks OP - great find - I've been looking all over the net and just cannot find anything near the price of this one.0 -
Thanks for the heads-up. The price and your recommendations have sold it for me! I just need to figure out if I'll need one for each of our 3 bedrooms, or if I can get away with 2.C'mon you Canaries!!0

Funny the amount of pregnant women trying the portable air con units! We bought one 3 yrs ago from B&Q on special offer - youve guessed it I was pregnant and it was a very hot summer...we used it for 1 night and it was so noisy that we took it straight back!
Pregnant again at the mo and would love a quiet air con unit but will stick to crunching ice cubes instead!! Still noisy, but not quite as bad LOL.0 -
Thanks mjr600. We've been looking for a reasonably priced and effective air con portable unit. You've done some great homework for me. I've just ordered one through quidco supposedly with 3% cashback. The site though is offering me ipoints with no mention of quidco- any one know what I'm doing wrong?
