Long Hot Summer - Portable Air Conditioning Units
Comments
-
I've just ordered a unit! I've got a condition where I can't regulate my body temperature and I overheat very badly. I rarely wear more than a teeshirt to go out, even in the middle of winter.
I've been looking for an aircon unit for ages and haven't been able to afford any of the ones I've seen so far
Thank you for sharing the information mjr600, this is going to make life so much more bearable for me0 -
Another thank you to mjr600 for letting us know of this find. I just ordered one myself after years of sleepless night in the summer.
I am sure there will be even better bargain somewhere some other time but having a goodnight sleep in the summer will worth every penny!
Long hot summer, come to papa!0 -
Yes it has a hose which you hang out of the window. For those who wish to use it as a dehumidifier, rather than have an internal bucket which fills it has a longer slim pipe which exits the machine and can also go out of a window or door in order that it does not have to be emptied.
Lara makes a very good point regarding the elderly. This summer is set to be another record breaker and in the event of a freak period of heat the elderly are most at risk. You only have to look to France a couple of years ago when for three days they suffered exteme heat and 18,000 people died. The majority were elderly, think I'll order another for my Mum although she'll kill me if she knows I've suggested she's 'old'.
And finally, I've been PM'd about the size so here you go.
77cm high
36cm deep
47.5cm wide
33kg
This is with the castors on and the wire/hose stored.
Its about as big as a large suitcase.0 -
I bought a portable a/c years ago from Innovations a few years ago - trailed the hose out of the windows and closed the curtains. I found that, while it did pump out cold air, it didn't actually reduce the temperature in the room - i.e when you walked into the room it stilll felt every bit as hot as the rest of the house, unless you stood in front of the unit. Our bedroom isn't that large either (about 4m by 2m). To that extent it was no better than a fan. For this reason I now leave the a/c in the corner and use a fan instead.
Has anyone who has bought one of these checked to see if it actually lowers the temperature in the room?0 -
Hi MRJ, thanks for the above. Just wanted to ask where you obtained your window fitting kit? Thinking of getting a portable for the summer.0

mine drops the temp. (portable unit)
rest of house 26 or so: room with air con after hour or so - 17!!! (changed the temp to 19 after that to save leccy and power). It is VERY noticeable and suggest yours isn't working prop? Had to turn it off in son's room - it got too cold for him!0 -
My car aircon needs to be topped up every couple of years to keep it lovely and frosty - do the portable units need refilling too?0

Is yours vented "properly" through the wall, or does the hose hang out of the window?0 -
Could I ask how long the hose is please.0

These units above are quite bulky and heavy. Argos do 9k BTU slim units from £170 for those looking for something smaller. http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=10651&langId=-1&searchTerms=air+conditioning
Also you CAN get mobile split air conditioning portable units see: http://global-cooling.co.uk/airconditioning/mobile-air-conditioning/mobile-air-conditioner/
They also have normal portable units: http://global-cooling.co.uk/airconditioning/mobile-air-conditioning/portable-mobile-air-conditioning/
I can highly recommend Global Cooling.
