Corsa Oil & Filter change & MOT cost?

I have been quoted £100 for a MOT & Oil & Oil filter change. Seems a bit dear to me but I know I wont get ripped off for extra work etc by this garage. He tells me synthetic oil is dear? Car is 3 years old and has only done around 8000 miles.

Is £100 a reasonable price?

It's not unreasonable. If you bought a decent grade oil from a shop, that'd probably cost you £20, filter's probably a fiver retail. The going rate for an MOT's about £40, so it sounds like he's charging you £30-40 for an hours work, which is about the going rate for a small garage.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

I agree with the above. Although I find good quality synthetic oil for my car a lot dearer than £20!
However, I'm happy to spend more on the oil as I change it myself. Its very easy to do and once you've bought some basic tools, the outlay in the future is only on the parts/materials.
Also, an oil change will always be necessary on any car you own so I think if that's the only DIY you ever learn to do on a car, it will save you a considerable amount over the years.
I'm no mechanic but I did mine yesterday and it took less than 30 mins to do. Most of that time was spent geting tools out and putting them away afterwards.
Lots of info on how to do it on you tube if you're not confident.

Tbh if they'd said £99, you probably wouldn't be asking this question.

Sounds like a fair price to me. I just got my car "serviced" at a main dealer and it cost £184 for an oil and filter change, pollen filter and "checks".
  • Yes we pay about £50 for oil and filter change, then think the MOT is about £45(not too sure on that one). So sounds ok to me.

Goto one of the fast fit places and get a ( SERVICE ) what a joke. Basically your getting an oil change and a list if faults they can fix quickly because they stock them.

The VOSA recommended test fee for a standard car is £54.85, although it is up to the garage if they want to do it for less.
Add in the oil & filter, plus the labour time it takes (45 mins for the MOT test alone) and £100 starts to sound very reasonable.

  • +1 for thats a decenet enough price.
Let me guess, local small independant garage? Established for >10 years?
Owner/Mechanic who swears like a trooper and has the customer service skills of hibernating bear, but somehow has a large and loyal customer base?
