Landlords Insurance

My husband is going to be renting out his two bed semi house soon for £500 pcm for the first time. He already had buildings and contents insurance and was wondering what level of Landlords Insurance he should get or indeed if it is necessary at all? He has a B Gas home cover plan in place for the heating, boiler and plumbing.
I understand from another post that he will have to contact his insurance company to change his building insurance company to change his building insurance to reflect his landlord status. Any other advice would be much appreciated for this first time landlord.

im just about to do the same and its a daunting prospect

Yes the building insurer must be informed beforehand that the property is going to be let. They may change the cover to reflect this or tell you that they don't provide insurance for rental properties and suggest you buy a product elsewhere. As long as you have the correct building insurance then you are covered should the property be damaged or destroyed. Now you need to decide what other cover you want, do you want cover incase your tenant stops paying rent and refuses to move out? Do you have any contents that will need insuring?
Don't forget that it is a legal requirement to protect the deposit and give the tenant the prescribed information, and to have annual gas safety certificates.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0
