Last year sometime we upgraded from 1mb to 2mb with Tiscali. Heres the deal we have http://www.tiscali.co.uk/products/broadband/bundle-2mb-wt.html?code=ZZ-NL-11EE
My download speed is only 66k at the maximum, at night say 2am sometimes the speed hits around the 75k mark.
I did a speed test and this is what I got
The speed test has completed on test server test.speedtester.bt.com for user 01270767990 and you have downloaded a 1.7Mb file at a speed of
391 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.
Your IP address is **************, your browser is reported as being Mozilla 5.0 and is running on Windows XP.
BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service:
For 250kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250kbps.
For 500kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500kbps.
For 1000kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps.
For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps.
Is this normal? My internet should be alot faster, some people have said when they "were" on 2mb they had download speeds of 200kbps!?
We cant upgrade to a faster service as the max our line can go at is 2mb. How can I speed this up?
Thanks

you've just said above that the speed test showed speeds of 391kbps?!?
It does depend on what you're downloading and where from and how.
One of the best tests is to try download a large linux distribution file ~ 500mb+ that will usually give you a good speed. If you are talking about dl speeds with a p2p client then quite often these are limited by your isp. Also your bandwidth will be shared with others (contention ratio).0 -
you are on Tiscali and a bt phone line (adsl)and they have a copout speeds up to 8mb which means any thing from dial up speed to 8mbs and unfortunatly in the uk broadband speeds on a bt line (adsl)or cable(dsl) line is a post code lottery ,
i do not no enought about Tiscali to even start to say how to get the speed on it ,you always try asking in the tascali forum at http://www.thinkbroadband.com/there or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff0 -

Sounds like your broadband speed is fine. You say your download speed is slow - what are you using to download? Bittorrent? If you let us know we can give you more advice.
Also try another speed test at http://numion.com/YourSpeed3/Run.php?QuickStart=SelectDefaults
Also I'd suggest deleting you IP from your original post -ppl might come round to Siddington to visit you...poppy100 -
Thats 391 kilo BITS which is 39kilo bytes. Im just downloading from ftp servers like oblivion mods etc which we all know are huge.
I tried downloading linux but it takes ages and again download speeds top at 70k/s its ridiculous.
I dont use limewire (or other p2p) or bittorrent. Mainly because there slow (well p2p is the same download speed as normal downloads) and bittorrent is even slower which I only use when a site offers a download. I think apple do it now or download.
This is my speed at 1.25am
Here you can see my average download speed. This surley cannot be 2mb at 1.30am. I know people who are getting the same speeds on 512

Other postings here have not mentioned line quality.
If your service is being delivered by a standard BT line, then it will be affected by your distance from the exchange - or problems with a below standard BT line.
I had problems because I am around 4 miles from the exchange. My reliabilty was improved when I made BT replace parts of the actual line.
Subsequently, having changed providers, despite an advertised speed of 8 mps, I'm only able to get 3mps - but since this is a six-fold improvement, I'm happy.
None of this applies if you have cable...0 -
Up to 2Mb Broadband and Free Weekend Talk
people on 512 can't get 675..Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

Sorry if this is going off at a tangent.....
I've just upgraded to the Tiscali Max package which up to 8MB, call, line rental, etc.
Now, here's the oddity.
Every time I connect to the net, I get a little pop-up near the control panel which tells me what speed I'm connected at. Yesterday, it was 4.8MB around lunchtime, and then went up to 5.1MB around 5pm
Tuesday it was around the 3.9MB mark and it seems to alter every time I connect.
BT say I can get up to 5.5MB on my line.
Is this normal?:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:
Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.0 -
Tiscali block certain traffic at peak hours (6-11pm) so thats why your speed will changed.
In relations to alias_omega....can you see what I mean. Were on a brand new estate (4/5years old) so the line shouldnt be that bad.
And yes I know its UP TO but they are really taking the p*ss with the up to thenCashback

Your download speed is hugely related to the type of service you're using, the source server and whether that server is bandwidth limited for it's connections. Your 60k is more likely a down-throttle on the source server, as your speed test shows 300k or so.
Also consider that exchange congestion and contention will be a huge factor in this too. I hate Tiscali however, and have seen BIG problems with some of my friends who chose them.
Just wait till you decide to leave! Thats when the fun starts....Throwing acid is bad.... in some peoples eyes...0
