No they cant claim Pension Credit because my dad has a work pension that takes them over the limit & I thought the underlying entitlement would only help if they were on a benefit

She can claim CA. She won't get the full amount but, depending on their other income, she could get what's called an "underlying entitlement" which will bring in a bit more money.

They don't have to be on a benefit but it can be affected by their other income. Depending on how much the work pension brings in, she may still get it. It's worth asking about.

I have an underlying entitlement. :) Every year I receive a letter telling me my weekly payment has increased from £0.00 to £0.00. :rotfl:

If you receive SRP and you have enough private pension to tip you over the limit for pension credit, you get zilch. If you and your spouse lived a prudent life, paying into company pension schemes, and saving carefully for your old age, you then find you're taxed, because your total income is more than your free pay, and that tax is helping support your peers who didn't pay into those schemes, or save.

I hope you don't spend it all at once!

It's still worth mentioning on these threads that it is possible to get the underlying entitlement to CA if your income is low enough. A lot of people think you can't get CA if you're on a pension and so miss out on a bit of extra help.

Well, sometimes I feel a bit reckless and devil-may-care, and plan exotic holidays ......

Absolutely it's worth mentioning. :) But unfortunately there are so many who are denied extra help, because they thought they were being wise in planning for their retirement. :(

I hope things work out for you, it's so wearing looking after someone all the time, and it's great that your Grandson can help out too. :A
