My father is on high rate AA looked after by mother & myself. My mother cant claim CA as she claims state pension & I cant claim as I work. My son is 18 & at college & will leave in June & depending on results will have to look for a job or is hoping to go to uni. We are hoping that in June he can start staying with my parents overnight & help out with care but will he be able to claim CA inbetween leaving college & starting Uni. He works part time at the moment 1 day a week.
Thanks

How many hours per week will he be caring for them?0

To get Carer’s Allowance you must meet all the following conditions:
- You look after someone who gets a qualifying disability benefit.
- You look after that person for at least 35 hours a week.
- You are aged 16 or over.
- You are not in full-time education.
- You earn £100 a week or less (after deductions).
- You satisfy UK presence and residence conditions.

He will be practically moving in stopping overnight, helping during the day & doing all the hospital appointments which I now have to take holidays for. We are also hoping that during that time my mam might be able to have a holiday with her sister.
He meets all the conditions just didn't know if he would be classed as a student he will have left college but will have applied for uni.0 -
Will you be notifying CB and CTC that he is no longer a student in June when he finishes school? If so, then those payments to you will stop. If not, then they will continue through the summer until September 1, - meaning that he is a student throughout the summer. It would be a matter of out of one pocket and into the other wouldn't it? Would be nice if he did it anyways before off to uni.0

Never thought about the CB didn't realise it would carry on till September & we don't get any CTC. He's already said he will do it whether he claims CA or not.0

Thanks I totally agree with the article.
My mother is 72 & is in good health but being a full time carer is starting to take its toll on her too. She get no payment as she gets a state pension. We have looked into respite care but again would have to fund ourselves.
Thanks for all the info.0 -
Can your dad claim the carers component whereby he receives a bit extra in his payments, and this could be used to get someone, even if for only a few hours a week to help your mum out? Would give you and her the opportunity to maybe go out together, give her a change of scenery for a few hours a week? Sometimes if you're overwhelmed and finding something hard, looking forward to a little bit of respite can keep you going0

Sometimes that is the way it rolls. I care for my grandma - her AA I recently applied for pays for her care on days I work. We pay £110 pw in care out of her pension. I am not able to give up work or I would so family all do what they can to lower this payment and the AA pays the bulk.
Are your parents getting pension credit? If not then do apply0 -

She can claim CA. She won't get the full amount but, depending on their other income, she could get what's called an "underlying entitlement" which will bring in a bit more money.0
