Sutton water standing charges

Options
I have yet to move into my new house, yet Sutton water want £35 PM water meter standing charges.

I checked their website they say their standing charges are £29 PA!!.

Can someone pls give me their water standing charges alone, without usage.

Have spoken to the water board they say the bill is split £8pm from Thames water to take sewage away & the rest is for Sutton Water meter charges.

I find it hard to believe i have to spend over £350+ PA without a single drop being used!.
No one said it was gonna be easy!

    Metered - £24.79+£52.00 per year.
    Unmetered - Could be anything...

    Are you on a meter.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • I might hazard a guess and say that the £35 pm "standing charge" is actually the water bill under the "Rateable value" system................. and NOT the standing charge in relation to a meter.

    Hi,
Looked at the bill of friends in the area, these are the standing charges for the meter.
Despite not using any water, water board want upfront standing charges.
Have spoken to the water board & they have written of the charges (only took 3 months!) till we are moved in properly!.
    Thanks for the replies.

That's the whole point of a standing charge-it's payable whether you consume water or not.
If you are not occupying the property, you can get an exemption for a fixed period, but that's not the same as 'writing off standing charges'. Once you occupy, you will pay standing charges however much or little you use.

I'm not sure that is correct, my water supplier charges a standing charge ALL the time - occupied or not.

    Back to the OP:
My standing charge is £42 a YEAR - it is just inconceivable that the OP's is £35 a month. I stand by my original thoughts.........................

    ...

I thought that macman was correct. My company Severn Trent do not charge for empty properties - even if water is connected.

I own a property / I am responsible for a supply, that I am currently not living at / using. Do I still have to pay for water charges?

    Empty properties

If the water supply is not in use, please notify us and we will cancel any future charges. Please note Severn Trent Water reserves the right to disconnect empty properties for safety, so if the supply is needed for any purpose (including heating, cleaning) then charges would remain payable.
