Extraordinary circumstances and claim for flight delay

Hi,
I wish to claim from LOT airlines for a 15hr flight delay but when I wrote to them they claimed the delay was ‘due to extraordinary circumstances outside their control'. When I asked what these circumstances where they said they were unable to divulge that information as it was confidential and they were not obliged to tell me.
Do I take their word for that and if not how do passengers find out what the cause for the delay was and whether it really was beyond the airline's control?
LOT are obviously not going to pay compensation without a fight - has anyone tried using one of the companies who takes 20% of any payout and handle your case for you and if so was this a good way of managing the claim?
