Hi guys,
I'm new to the forum and i'm having a new kitchen built, I wanted to know if any of you more experienced folk were able to see if this quote was fair? Also, wanted to check if there's anything in there that we don't really need.
I have already decided that i won't be using the Howdens appliances so they can be ignored.
The quote is for the Glendevon Cream
Many thanks in advance

Not sure about the quote but if the discounts have come in at the price range you mention, then that's pretty normal in my experience with Howden's.

Will be having a Glendevon quote myself in the next couple of weeks along with a Magnet Studio quote (have had this range in the past) and will see how they compare.

Regarding your kitchen, as well as sourcing your own appliances, which I see you are going to do, source your own sink and tap and door handles too. This is what I tend to do & you can save loads by doing this. You should be able to get the same handles for near enough half price if you look on ebay.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

looking at the quote + total (sale prices)
you could prob source yourself a slab lacquered gloss kitchen for that quote with a cream carcass (rather than the white your offered) with lacquerd plinths (not plastic)
Also in my experience quoting off howden designs they do tend to add more end panels than required.
but this hard to tell off a list and not a plan

no thats a terrible price and discounts on the units. They have over discounted the appliances as they cant sell them any higher as they are rubbish

Having had a quote from Howdens recently on the same kitchen, although different units mainly, for a house i'm refurbishing to sell on. They gave the old 70-75% trade discount but everyone can get that to be fair. I ended up going to IKEA and buying it from there, I was quoted £4025.57 from Howdens inc the cheapest appliance pack of £100 for oven/hood/hob but i'd never put that in a house. I paid 1493.00 at IKEA without appliances.

A few things my quote does have the same as yours and the prices...INCLUDING DISCOUNT...

TAP3521 GARDA SWAN NECK TAP £50.00, I got 87.37% disc.
GLR5431 600 Wall £113.10 same price as you.
GLR5600 600 Base Unit £81.30 same price as you.
GLR5421 500 Wall £93.00 same price as you.

Try Wickes for a quote, you may be pleasantly surprised. I found Howdens, who's kitchens MFI supplied, quite expensive. I tried them all and ended up with Wickes who were considerably cheaper than their competitors. Tesco and Magnet made you're eyes water and B&Q were cheap and nasty. I have no interest in Wickes apart from buying their products.

    From the Unite website

"Customers of the kitchen maker Howdens Joinery could face disruption to the delivery of their bespoke kitchens as a potential dispute is brewing because hardworking drivers face the sack.

Unite, Britain's biggest union, is preparing an industrial action ballot for DHL workers operating the Howdens Joinery contract, in a dispute over the company's decision to relocate the Widnes (Merseyside) transport operation to Howden in East Yorkshire with the loss of 64 jobs.

No sound or tangible business rationale has been offered for the relocation of Howdens’ transport operation. Unite believes the company's decision is an attack on the strongly unionised workers by an anti-union employer.

Unite regional officer Neil Clarke said: "The Widnes transport operation is the most heavily used in Howdens' entire network but the company has failed to give the union any meaningful reason for the proposed shift. We believe this is a blatant attack on a strongly unionised workforce.

"Unite is determined to protect its members' jobs and, if necessary, we will fight the decision but we still remain committed to trying to resolve this issue through meaningful dialogue. We believe that both Howdens and DHL have a moral duty to support and protect the long serving and loyal workforce."

On Thursday 3 January 2013 DHL informed employees working at the Widnes transport operation for the Howdens Joinery contract that Howdens is proposing to terminate its transport operations at Widnes on 4 February 2013 and relocate to a transport hub in Howden (North East) that is not yet in existence. DHLDriver. Thats three times now. You've made your point and any more will be reported as trolling. I fail to see why your own dispute should be used as a weapon to damage the manufacturers business nor mine for that matter should a client of mine really rather fancy a Howdens kitchen.

    [RANT]

Its probably very simple. In the current economic climate costs are too high, and margins are under pressure. Your employer can't or won't play ball on costs because of restrictive working practices and militancy of a highly unionised workforce. Result manufacturer says stiuff it - I'll make other arrangements. The fault is entirely that of your inflexible and intransigent union and you think its OK to bring this dispute here. Well only up to a point.

Sorry if that appears anti you. It isn't. Everyone is struggling at present and you have no right to tell me and my clients where to spend our money. Your lot need to accept that there is pain to be shared rather than chucking toys out of the pram. :D

Have you bought this kitchen yet?

The discounts on a few items is pretty drastic especially the dishwasher.

However the discount on the units and panels is not. You can get them to go a lot cheaper than that.

They can do all of the furniture at 80% off and still be making a very good profit margin.
Be careful that this quote they have given you is not an arrangement between the builder and Howdens, where he is actually invoiced a price much lower than they are quoting you when he actually comes to buy it.

There are old posts on this site showing were a builder has an arrangement for the client to pay Howdens £6000 into his account for a kitchen they invoice him at £4000 and he gets the difference back from Howdens or it stays on his account as a credit.

    Let the buyer beware

Hiya, Just to let you know I did buy the howdens kitchen, but on advise from here I sourced taps, electrical equipment, sink and dishwasher myself (even though sometimes more expensive i felt the quality would be better).

I am not sure if the builder got a cut of it all. He seems really trustworthy and is a family friend. However, you never know... he seemed annoyed if I didn't go for a Howdens kitchen, because he said with Howdens he has a relationship whereby if things are not quite right he can return them quite easily. Hmm.
  • hmm indeed.
