New TV - no sound via HDMI????

I bought a new Celcus 32" TV from Sainsbury's at Christmas, but for some reason I cannot get any sound from either the XBOX or Blue Ray Player when connected via an HDMI cable.

I have already returned one TV and got a replacement, but the replacement is the same.

I can connect the same XBOX and Blue Ray player to my existing TV using the same HDMI cable and it works fine.

I cannot find anything in the manual as to a setting I have missed.

Any idea's as to why I am not getting any sound?

Are you sure its the TV and not just you? (without wanting to sound rude, you could be using what you think is HDMI but infact something entirely different!)

Or you could have it on mute..

No it's not me honest. I have used the same cable to connect the Xbox and Blue Ray to my old TV and it works fine and it is most definitely not on Mute.

What is really strange is that when you first start the Xbox, when you get the Xbox logo appear on the screen I get some sound then, but as soon as you get to the Xbox dashboard there is nothing. With the blue ray player there is just no sound.

Well if you connected correctly, you can check the inputs are correctly assigned. With some TVs you need to tell it its to use HDMI, rather than scart or composite etc? Likewise check the DVD player settings that it is configured to use HDMI.

On the new TV I select the correct HDMI slot using the "source option. I get the picture no problem, just no sound - very strange.

penrhyn - Thanks for the link and no I'm not Lynn but it's interesting to see someone else has exactly the same problem.

I have phoned and emailed Celcus and explained the problem and I am waiting for one of their technical support guys to call me back. It was handy to have Lynn's comment that penrhyn found

A number of TV's offer an audio sub-menu in which the set ignores the incoming audio stream (via HDMI) to let the user select a Soundbar or 5.1 speaker systems.

Since audio is heard momentarily, is sounds like a configuration issue.

This is what I think too, I am sure it must be a simple config issue, but I just cannot find an option. Hopefully Celcus will call me back with someone who knows what they are doing and can assist.

Might there also be a problem with audio formats? There's MPEG, AAC (Dolby Digital) DTS etc, and also PCM, which is the 'basic' digital audio format (used by CDs too). The XBox and the Blu-Ray player should have settings for these, try cutting back to just PCM to see if that works, then add some more in.

    Most likely this.

It's always frustration when you have a suspicion about something and can't find the option in the menu system!

If you're sure you've exhausted every single possible menu selection, you've done the right thing by contacting their tech support.

    Good luck!

Just had a call from the technical support and apparently this is a known fault and they are having to look at it at the factory. He did suggest flicking through the different "source" options once you have started the Xbox and sound might return.

Looks like I'm going to have to return it to Sainsbury's :-(
