One MoneySavingExpert.com user, Jo, emailed us saying: "We sent Santa a letter on 8 December first class and have received nothing but a very upset seven-year-old.
Ok, they might not have got a letter from Santa, they did however get a new child out of the whole ordeal.

Once it gets used to its new surroundings it will probably cheer up a bit too.

Oh please stop whining about Royal Mail, they provided a free service that worked for most people - and it did state they did not guarantee replies. I've both worked for Royal Mail and am obviously a customer and I find them pretty good 99% of the time. Like others have suggested, how about sending your own Santa letter which is personal to your child? Too many people wanting to get something for nothing and then complain when they don't.

  • It's an absolute con - although I'm surprised at some of the anti-Santa messages on here. Where has your Christmas spirit gone, people?!

Anyway, we sent letters up the chimney as we always do, but when I had my neices staying all the kids wrote to the Royal Mail one as I thought it would be fun for them to get a letter back. Five first-class stamps later (sent in first week of December), and nothing. So the Royal Mail do very nicely out of it thank you. £3 for no work, and how many families did they reel in with it? Won't be doing it again. And I suggest MSE thinks carefully before including it in next Christmas's e-mail too...

I always do my own Santa letter. I write children's books as my job, but the reaction from my kids and the expression on their faces when they hear all the personal little touches Santa has put in his letter is just as satisfying as any book deal.
  • It's not just Chrismas and Santa Letters that Royal Mail fail to deliver.
For the past 3 years my cards and letters to my Sister who lives in Halling in Kent from myself who lives in Wisbech CAMBS have failed to be delivered, even a recorded delivery letter went astray. The only time a letter got through either from me to her or her to me was when they were sent Special delivery!
This year, I checked, weighed and ensured adequate postage and put a return address on the letter and it still went missing.
when I called to complain after repeatedly getting recorded messages, I chose a random option to get through to a person, I was told that I should send post recorded if it was important...Sorry but if you take the time to send a letter, or something through the post, when there are so many alternatives nowaday's, THEN IT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU!!
I was then told that it was not classed as missing until 15 working days had passed, and then had to go online to claim back the postage, but could not claim for the content as these were not insured!!, and thats 1st Class!! the letter was sent on 12/12/12 and today has still not arrived!
It's time somebody out there started a mail delivery service which which would put Royal mail out of the running. I would happily use an alternative supplier if one existed
My personal view is that there is a great deal of maladministration prevelent at RM and has been for some time.
No other service provider would get away with what they get away with and still be in business!!

    I've been Money Tipped!
I sometimes wonder how I survived childhood without a letter back from Santa!

A letter to him, followed by a present under the tree on Christmas day was the best reply you can get.

Our little boys Letter from Santa arrived on Christmas Eve so just in time. I can't actually fault Royal Mail this Christmas, I posted some cards to the US on a Tuesday and they had arrived by Friday the same week.

It's a free service and you get what you pay for.

To anyone who did not get their letter (and those that did) - I suggest that you try the NSPCC next year. I have done this for the last couple of years. You get a personalised letter and my son loves it. There is a recommended donation of £5. If you were feeling particularly mean, then you don't have to pay this. But let's face it, at Christmas there is so much money wasted on food or presents people don't want, so it's nice to give some money to something worth while for a change.
