  • Depends what you need. You could advertise for a freelance web designer, but it can cost a lot of money depending on your needs. You could try a service like 1&1 my website if you only need something basic, you just put in your text and move your layout around in a visual format.

Without any idea of what you're after the likely price might be £50 to £500,000 - basically how long is a piece of string?

Before anyone can give any idea of costs, you need to give an idea of what the site is for (private, business, e-commerce etc), size, complexity and so on.

For your own straightforward site then consider a site builder - you build your own using preset designs. http://www.fasthosts.co.uk/web-hosting/sitebuilder/ or http://www.moonfruit.com/ for example (but I'm not recommending them)

    Hi

Thanks for the response, all I'm looking for is just a basic website so my girlfriend can sell flowers and use Paypal on the site, around 6-8 pages that's all

    Cheers

Will the site advertise the flowers? i.e. a prospective customer chooses from options, places an order, pays via Paypal then receives an order confirmation email?

If yes then you're looking at an ecommerce site. For a basic version (i.e. getting someone to arrange web hosting, domain name, and set up the "shop" based on a standard shopping cart package with minimal customising) then you're looking at £750+. And this doesn't include uploading the photos, configuring the options etc.

Of course you could get this done cheaper using an overseas code shop, but then you'd need to take into account communication with them and getting things sorted to your satisfaction.

There are many people (and companies) who can do this sort of thing. http://giftsforgranny.co.uk/ was the last one I did.
  • Build your own site using Serif Webplus software.
    No programming required.

    http://www.serif.com/webplus/

Loads of help on their forum...

And use One.com to host the site for about £20 per year...

Have fun learning how to build a website - It really is easy.

I second WebPlus X5 and even X6.....you can build a paypal page (or 2 or 3 etc) for your flowers (i.e. insert a photo, description, etc for each item you need for the cart and then add a paypal button. You can create drop-down menus and so on with ease). That way it looks more of a professional website using your own design (i.e. the trouble with ecommerce websites is that you normally have to faff around with its php code etc just to get the look you want). With a package such as webplus life is easier.

Buildng a GOOD website ISN'T easy unless you have the necessary skills IMO.

With ecommerce customer confidence is so important, professional presentation is essential if you want visits to convert sales.

Precisely. And to get the sales you need to get the visits in the first place ... a home-brew website is unlikely to rate highly in search engines unless you know what you're doing, thus less likely to get visited.

Bear in mind though - traditional marketing techniques (adverts in local papers, leaflet drops etc.) will yield much better results than simply hoping for search engine hits. :)
