    Hi everyone

I'm enjoying reading lots of moneysaving ideas on here, and gradually starting to put a few into practice. But lots of them involve spending extra time, and I can't do that. Money-wise, I'm living within my means but wanting to cut back so as to save more. Time-wise I always have a deficit and am trying to catch up with myself (single parent of primary-school-age kids, two part-time jobs, elderly parents etc etc)

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's time-poor. So, all you lovely helpful people, what are your favourite ideas for saving both money and time all in one go?

    Thanks,
    Lydia

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

  • Ive been making homemade ready meals. Cook an extra potion of food each night and freeze to take to lunch at work. Only really works if you have a microwave at work though. It's really nice to have warm food now the weather is so cold and I'm sure this is working out loads cheaper than sanwiches even when I make my own!

My number one suggestion is batch cooking ;)

If you have three mouths to feed, then consider cooking six or nine portions at a time. Eat the first lot and divide what's left into suitable sized freezer boxes and freeze. Then all you need to do is defrost and reheat as needed.

It might take a teeny bit longer to prep, but means you only need to "cook" one day in three ;)

    Hi Lydia,

There's an earlier thread that may help so I'll add your thread to it to keep the suggestions together. These threads may also give you some ideas:

I also batch cook and freeze but I portion out the food before serving the meal to be eaten. This way you only eat the amounts you have portioned. eg. with Shepherds and fish pies I make several meal sized dishes for the freezer. They then only need taking out and defrosting and heating for a meal.

I know some people will freeze the meat in meal sized portions and then add the potato when making the meal. Probably saves room in the freezer and doesn't need as many dishes. I prefer it my way but each to their own!!

  • Just wondered if people would share their time saving tips for keeping on top of things. I have changed the way i do things so that i'm not spending my whole life cleaning and tidying the house. I'm trying to find as many ways of saving time as possible in preperation for the arrival of our first baby in December. So things like, i clean the shower every morning while i'm in it including the glass doors, it takes probably an extra minute every morning to whip over it all and never gets grubby. Likewise i clean the bath whenever its used and the sink gets a wipe over in an evening along with the toilet getting squirted with cleaner before bed and wiped over in the morning. I try to clean the windows on the inside one room at a time each week which means they each get cleaned every 5 or 6 weeks and this seems to keep them clean enough. I've just started doing a bit of the batch cooking so i only cook from scratch every 2-3 weeks and the rest of the time have partially prepared things already.

What other simple time saving things do you do??
