What laptop should I buy?

Options
Hi you experts. Please be gentle with a 70+.
My over 5 year old Medion laptop is dying.
I need one to do, light photo editing through Picasa. Use word for letters etc. and general surfing.
So what do you recommend I should buy?
Thanks in advance

I would also like to ask this question, we are both seniors, have a very old slow pc.
Need a laptop for keeping in touch with grandchildren, so need webcam, letters, and a little shopping.
Any help would be most appreciated, thank you.

slow old pc's can be made fast again - see post 4

there are so many options for laptops, anything in the £300-400 should do, there are some in my post above, and in various other threads

look for something with a 1.3 or 2 megapixel camera, and try out the keyboard/mouse and windows8 before buying if possible

an i3 or i5 is a good starting point, both should be under £400

Chromebooks are okay IF you want to commit your way of working to Google. In my opinion they are really only good if all you want to do is web surfing and email, and use Google docs.

    Thanks for your replies.
I have been looking around and I am wondering about a 10 inch Samsung Galaxy, what are your thoughts on this.

    It's a tablet and not a laptop/notebook. ;)

But if it does what you need it to do then go for it. :)

As to a Chromebook ... why not get one, wipe it and install Linux Mint 14? That way you get a cheap "notebook" computer that probably does everything you need whilst still retaining local storage of files. (Linux Mint is quite windows-esque in its look and feel, and LibreOffice [free alternative to MS Office] handles MS Offfice files and feels more like MS Office 2003 ... before they moved to the ribbon bar). :)

The chome ones are very good but they don't work without a broadband connection - the faster the better.
Do you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring
