SKY Broadband Is it worth it?

Currently out of contract with Talktalk, and have just received an offer from Sky for 12months unlimited free broadband with £14.50 line rental free evening & weekend calls. BB is £7.50 pm thereafter. This would be a 12mth contract.

Currently paying on average £26pm to TT, relatively little problems with them. Just wondering what Sky were like and if it was worth the hassle in changing?

Are you with Sky for TV?

Tesco Broadband is a bit cheaper at £16.25 a month for 12 months followed by £20.25 a month.

It is always a hassle changing so I look for long term cheap deals rather than introductory deals so that I don't have to switch as often.

Sky average cost over first year is £18.25 a month followed by £22.00.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

If both Sky and TT are unbundled on your exchange you won't notice a great deal of difference.

Your only real deciding factor is the savings you'll make.

Also consider you probably won't be able to take your number, plus it could be two months before Sky can arrange an appointment with a BT Openreach Engineer to do the work on the cabinet/exchange.

I currently have Sky, it's very good. But I'm moving to Talk Talk at the beginning of Feb (ordered mid-December) because Sky seems massively over-subscribed around here. Plus my router is on the way out and they want me to pay nearly £40 for a new router. Talk Talk will be cheaper for me, it's unbundled at the exchange so the speeds will be similar of not exactly the same. I'll get a new router too.

Don't bother with Sky. Full of empty promises. I signed up with them on 5th December for their broadband. I was promised £25 credited to my account because I wasn't entitled to the M&S vouchers via phone (only online). I thought this was great because I don't shop at M&S anyway. I was told that my first payment would be 1st Feb (the £25 credit meant 1 month free).

However, I have just had £10 taken from my account for 'charges' because I only have Sky broadband and not Sky TV (I was never informed of these charges). Called up their expensive 'support' line to be told that there was no evidence of the £25 credit and was then put on hold. During that time the phone went dead! I called back and they still refused to issue the £25 credit. I said that they will lose a customer once my contract ends and after five minutes of being on hold I finally got my £25 credit! (Probably paid £25 in phone charges though!!)

The only way you would have Sky broadband without Sky TV is to take Sky Talk as well, in which case all calls to Sky service numbers are free. If you are being charged for calls this is wrong.

  • Sky broadband is unlimited with no fair use policy, so if you're a heavy internet user, it may be worth it. If you've never had any warnings from TalkTalk, then you're not likely to need a completely unlimited package though. Customer service with Sky is very hit and miss. They never seem to have a record of previous conversations.
Ring TalkTalk and see if they can offer you a better deal since you've been a good customer for at least the length of your contract with them, they may match or beat Sky's offer if they want your custom.

Yes, to having Sky TV, does this make a difference? Just that I've not really had any problems with TT, only noticed that now I'm out of contract with them my monthly bill seems a little higher by about £6pm.

You are not out of contract, you are on a 30 day rolling contract after the initial 12 months where you may have had some sort of discount.
If you have Sky TV, then your BB unlimited should cost you £7.50 / month with Sky Talk + line rental at £14.50 ( or £119.40 as a 12 month up front payment). Of course the extra may be to pay for the latest Sky ad, Aniston don't come cheap.

You might not be able to move from Talk Talk direct to Sky though, you need to check it our first. LLU to LLU can be difficult, you normally have to go back to the original which is normally BT ?

I've just gone from SKY to Plusnet, mainly because the Sky TV had gone and I didn't want to pay the premium. But I could do this and keep my existing number.

They have just gone unlimited too, so I think it's £9.99 a month (Market 3 Exchange) on a 12 month contract + Line Rental (paid upfront = £10.99 a month). Plus I'm no longer stuck with the limitations of a LLU providers line so can move to almost any product when out of contract.

PS. Forgot to mention new users get the BB for 1/2 price for 6 months with Plusnet.
