Don't skimp on the underlay. Cheap, poor quality underlay can make an expensive carpet look pants after a very short time. Quality underlay can make a cheap carpet look a million dollars.

Agreed. I've used cheap pu underlay before that seemed to seriously flatten and squish out,when walked on or anything placed on it, under the carpet leading to it bulging up towards the gripper and the underlay joints.You could also feel firm bits in it which wasn't particularly nice!

Good underlay is always worth it,getting a good on online is always cheaper!

I got Cloud 9 Cumulus 11mm thick and its like walking on air, but only got it downstairs. Have you got any carpet redmant shops nearby, as for not much more than your 750 for fitting I got carpet for 4 rooms, 2 lots of laminate flooring (totalled 600 inc delivery), £134.94 for underlay for the 2 downstairs rooms and carpet grippers (didn't end up using them and the carpet hasn't shifted) and I fitted the carpet myself with a friend as they were all quoting far too much really. and once its rolled out with a good stanley knife (i got mine off ebay) it was easy enough to do

We'll soon be putting new carpet down in the living room, and my DH always fits them himself. It's the first time in this room though, and the trouble is it's a concrete floor.

I would also choose the Cloud 9 Cumulus 11mm, but does a anyone know if this will be enough for a concrete floor, with the underlay being foam, or should we go for a rubber one?

I bought all my carpet from Trago Mills, for those of you who know the south west.

They are recommended as having the best value carpet generally, but I bought on a 15% off everything sale day.

All in I will carpet, front room, 2 x stairs, 2 x landings, 3 x doubles, 1 x single, which involved buying 105m2 of carpet for:

Carpet £825
Underlay £210
Fitting & Collection £290
Total £1325

Carpet Right, on their boxing day sale, would have cost something like £2400 for it all, with a lower quality underlay and comparable carpet.
