Carpet fitting

Hi,

We recently moved into a new place which needs some carpet.

Went to carpet right who gave us a quote, which was price of carpet, plus some overpriced underlay, plus fitting of 3 pounds a sq metre, plus 29 delivery, plus a unknown premium for stairs. Anyone know what extra for stairs might me?

Didn't seem too bad if I bought my own underlay.

Then a friend recommended a friend who is a carpet fitter and they came, measured and quoted today.

There is a total of
Front room
Stairs x 2
Hall x 2
Double bedrooms x 3
Single room x 1

He gave us measurements of carpet to buy, totalling around 122 sq m. I'm sure that includes quite a bit of waste.

He quoted 750 to fit inc materials and collection, but that excludes underlay and says can reuse gripper rods. Said would take a day.

By my reckoning he is charging us closer to 6 pounds a sq m to fit, compared to the 3 pounds at carpet right.

Am I missing anything? Any thoughts? I'm just surprised that the carpet fitter was so dear after giving carpet right a bashing for being a rip off.

Also, anyone know if it would be possible (sensible) to put carpet on the roof rack of my Volvo estate? Say 12 metres of a 5 metre roll if I can get a friend to do the urgent bits?

Thanks.

Stairs cost more because they're a pain in the bum ;) They're not as straight forward to do and generally take more time than rooms do.I assume that's why they cost more.

Get a few more quotes,Carpetright are usually dearer on fitting.

Buy your underlay online,it'll save you a fortune - tradepriced are good for underlay and gripper rods.

Not sure about putting the carpet on your roof rack,I wouldn't do it but I don't drive lol

I paid a man and van to collect and deliver the carpet for ds room because it was so much cheaper. Only downside I had was, because I ordered his carpet online,it was on a cardboard tube, that combined with it being 6.5 meters long, narrow stairs and the layout of my house we couldn't get it upstairs...so,he left it on the stairs and I stood, very sweatily holding it up at one end turning it to unroll, then trying to keep it to one side as much as possible before getting down on my knees and dragging it up the stairs and round the corner to ds room, where I promptly threw myself into starfish position on the lovely cold underlay to relax:o:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Google for carpet fitters in your area and u should be able to get a competitive quote. Double check that you need 5mtr width. I agree with the other poster that you can pick up underlay cheaply on the internet.

The Carpetright premium for stairs isn't a massive amount of money. I can't remember exactly how much, but cheap enough that I considered paying it rather than doing mine myself.

That said, from experience, the quality of their fitters can be a bit hit and miss. You don't get any choice in who you get so you could get the Number 1, or 21!

You've got a dilemma , serves you right for going to Carpet Right...lol...average fitting price is around £3 metre a little extra for stairs. Fitters make their money supplying gripper , underlay and door bars. Tell the guy thanks but no thanks, ask around your area about fitters word of mouth beats the yellow pages anyday

    Thanks for the replies.

I went on to google for a local carpet fitter last night, gave him a ring and he reckons based on rough measurements, for what sounds like comparable fitting, I'm looking at about £200-£250, and he's coming over this evening to do a full quote.

Does anyone have a reccommendation for underlay?

I've had the Tredair Dreamwalk reccommended, which you can get for about £3 a metre, this looks very similar to the cloud 9 cumulus which is about the same price. Although I'm quite happy with £3 a metre, is there a no name version that will be just as good but cheaper?!

I'm in a similar situation and would also appreciate advice. I am desperate to renew the carpet on my stairs and landing as mine is cream (or used to be!) and gets a lot of traffic. But CarpetRite quoted me about £800 and an independent fitter was even more. If anyone can recommend any fitters in the Bucks area, I would be very grateful!

I know, I've had a look but it's difficult as I don't know if the people advertising are qualified or cowboys! To be honest, I can't afford it right now anyway so I'll give it another go in a few months.

Which area do you live in?
We use a great guy who buys the carpet direct and fits it (has loads of samples to show you in your house) he was loads cheaper than carpet right and also someone I know whose husband worked for carpet right who was doing it on the side (he was charging me more for the underlay alone, than what I did pay in total for the whole job!!)

The second fitter came and quoted 270 to do the whole job in 2 halves, to allow for decorating inbetween.

He also measured 10 sq m less.

So I've booked him. No idea what the first fitter was on.
