Forever....but...you must use the SIM once every 60 days. From wherever you are just send a text from the SIM every 60 days...or to prevent forgetting just send a text a month. It will cost 8p to send a text from the EU to the UK or 49p from elsewhere and that comes of your £10.
It is worth saying that Ovivo topups apparently expire after 360 days, but incoming calls/texts (if you are abroad) suffice for keeping the sim active.

Are there any physical shops where I can buy an Ovivo or Giffgaff sim?

No you have to go online and it takes a few days to deliver and I think that's what's going to let you down. For the short term with 5 minutes a day calling just get any SIM ...go to carphone warehouse...they'll probably throw in an almost free phone...and add on a data pack for £5 or so for a month.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

I've seen Giffgaff banners in some independent shops, but it's pretty unpredictable.

You can buy it on ebay and they will sell it abroad if you pay for the postage.

I think I'll buy an O2 International Sim as £1 per day for 50 mb use is about what I need and calls to Belgium are dirt cheap.

    Again, many thanks to everyone!
