what reaction can I expect?

Imagine my embarassment when a Christmas gift I gave was unwrapped and found to have the security tag still in it.

I HAD paid for it and have the receipt.
In the pre-Christmas rush the shop assistant must have forgotten to remove the tag and I must have got out of the shop without the tag being noticed by their security check.

I am not sure whether it cost £9.99 or £12.99 as I bought two similar items of those prices.
The gift is an item of clothing and the shop was TK Maxx.

I plan to take it back tomorrow to have the tag removed. what reaction do you think I will get?
Will I be accused of stealing?

Take your receipt and explain, I'd expect an apology for having to make a return trip and wouldn't very happy if it was out of my way.

If you have the receipt then I don't foresee a problem. It's happened to me before at Debenhams and there was no issues taking it back to get the tag removed.

    No.

This has happened to me before, it's probably quite common.
  • Hi,

I bought a pair of walking trousers online, and they arrive with a tag on, so rather than send them back I hacked and snipped and sawed (tough stuff that wire) until I got it off, made a wee bit of damage, but was in a hidden bit.

Anyway was telling girl at Tesco checkout (ok) :o, and she said if I'd taken them in there she could've broken it, so maybe you could try a shop near you that has a scanner?

I attended my daughters wedding in October, I had a lovely red jacket on and a black and white dress which I had bought for the occassion.
The skirt was in folds down to my shins.

Ceremony over, walking round the grounds having photos taken and I suddenly see my sister behind me dragging at my skirt, yes, you guessed it. The security tag was still on it. The funny thing about it was that as soon as she tugged at it the Bells from York Minster started to ring out very loudly,
It caused great hilarity about me shoplifting my outfit.

No problem back at the shop but I did make my other half stay outside with it till I got the all clear because I had bought it months before and of course had no receipt. They were very very apologetic, specially since I'd worn it at a wedding
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Same happened with an item of clothing brought from Tesco. Took it back with the receipt, they apologised and took it off. You've got nothing to worry about.

You have nothing to worry about! I bought a cosmetics bag/pack/set thing in Boots which had the tag on it, I managed to set off every flipping alarm in every shop while still thinking it was someone else, I eventually got 'caught' by the security guard in M&S who asked to go through my bags and he said "ah, it's your Boots stuff that's got a tag on it" and he actually removed the tag himself! It happens all the time. The shop should be embarrassed for leaving the tag on.

What is more embarrassing is my poor mother managing to wheel her trolley out of Waitrose with half the goods still inside unpaid for, she was having a 'senior moment' and just forgot to load the rest of the stuff on the conveyor belt. She's as honest as the day is long and had a hot flush worrying about it and went charging back into the shop expecting to be handcuffed, they not only thanked her for her honesty but let her keep the items for free and gave back twice their price! We have a joke now that she needs to learn how to shop lift more often!
