Thanks for that easy. My needs are simple - calls and texts and not a lot of those. Seems from what you say this could be ideal.

So you don't need a smartphone. You just need a dumb phone with a SIM only contract, or PAYG.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

But until you get a smartphone, you don't realise how useful it is.

Spexs may well only NEED a phone for a few texts and calls now, but will probably start to find they use the other features more once they have had it a while. I often use mine now to get directions to somewhere if I haven't been before, use it to look up a phone no. (free online rather than using 118 type services, and for me easier than searching thru a yellow pages) . We also have our newspapers on subscription, which offers free digital access, so if I'm waiting for a dentist appointment, a bus or any other sort of queue, I can while away the time reading the news stories on my phone (or for that matter, catching up with The Archers on iPlayer) And the 500 mb data allowance in this deal gives you plenty of scope in a month for such things.

I still think that at £7.50 a month this is an excellent deal, and a good way to join the smartphone generation.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

This is exactly the debate I am having as I only NEED a phone for texting and the odd call although a smart phone would allow me to check the train times when I'm away for a couple days, get directions if I'm lost or check the latest football results when I'm shopping! It seems far from straightforward to choose!

Nice budget PAYG smartphones can usually be had for less than £50.

You can usually unlock them yourself. Upgrade the operating system and remove bloatware and you have a decent phone.

You can get free bundles of calls, texts and minutes every month on PAYG.

So, unless you are a heavy user, why pay £180, when you could pay less than £50?

Plus you have peace of mind - less worrying about losing the phone or it being stolen and the thief running up thousands of £ of calls. (Caps don't always work, especially if the phone is taken abroad- see fine print on contract, although they are much safer than uncapped contract sims.)
