Gimp works fine on windows 7 make sure you use a stable version rather than a beta one. and if you're not sure what you're doing, there are plenty of youtube instructional videos

I really appreciate the helpful replies- I didn't even know where to get started. Really looking forward to learning a bit more about photo editing- I take quite a good snap but would like to progress a little, so thanks to all.
