If you want to do very basic editing such as cropping, joining, red eye removal, brightening or putting labels on pictures then I find irfanview very userfriendly and well covered on youtube

OP, you really need to post back with what you want to do with your photos.

For simple editing and managing of photos I would recommend Picasa this what I use.

At the photoshop end of the spectrum is Paint.net

Others obviously have differing preferences

This thread is exactly what I was searching for, so thanks! On Facebook, I keep seeing photo's that look 'retro,' a bit tatty and old, yet they are not. Any idea how this is done please? Complete novice on this front but really enjoying learning.

Couple of ways

If you have irfanview, click image, effects, sepia

If you have fotosketcher, use vintage photo, click draw
