(legal) movie downloads

Options
Happy new year folks :)

We have a fab deal on our broadband - 60gb limit plus free data 12am-8am - and due to various factors it's difficult for me to browse racks of DVDs locally so I was wondering if there was a legal, cheapish ways to download movies & burn to a DVD to watch at home or on our laptop when away? Similar to buying & downloading Mp3 music and making a music CD from them?

Thanks in advance for your help!

No. And even with MP3s it's still legally a grey area.
  • Kind of.

You could buy double/triple play Blurays that have a digital copy included.

  • Thanks for the replies - I meant cheap as in supermarket price DVD :) Guess I might have to just buy a few movies & store on the external HDD!

you won't get anywhere that will do "download to disk"
you'll get a lot of streaming sites (Netflix, Blockbusters, Amazon, Google play)

But most are rental only (you get 30 days to start watching it then 48h to actually watch the film before you're blocked

You could take a look at Goolge Play you can buy digital versions of some of their titles and you can download to watch on any PC or Android device.

Meanwhile the rights holders wring their hands and bewail the prevalence of piracy....

It's no grey area -- it's unlawful to rip a CD and put it on your MP3 player. If you have a CD and want to listen to it on your MP3 player, you (legally) have to buy another copy.

I saw a news story a few weeks ago that suggested that the government was looking at changing the law fairly soon to permit format-shifting for personal use...

A grey area cos there is not 1 case of an actual prosecution, for personal format-shifting, in the UK to date. To be clarified soon. Maybe.

Not that I can think of. You can download movies from iTunes and watch those in your laptop. However, you will need a HDMI cable or a similar cable in order to watch it your TV as you'll have to connect your laptop.

    Its a huge grey area.

Yes it is illegal, but the music and film industry knows it is happening and they turn a blind eye to it, as the know it would be pointless to pursue everyone who does it. Only time they do anything is when someone would mass produce CD's or then sell the mp3 on for a profit.

Hence why quite a few DVD's now come with Digital copy
