Long term investments

I have £150 at the end of every month that I would like to invest. I plan on investing £50 into medium risk investments and the remaining £100 into somewhere 'safe'.

I would like the 'safe' option to allow me to:
  • Leave the money in their indefinately, perhaps until I retire (I'm 25 now).
  • Be able to add a little more or less each month depending on how I'm fixed.
Any ideas? The interst rates at the moment seem stuck at 4.75% which isn't exactly great (I'm morgage free for now). I came across a few american web sites where rates of 6%+ are being offered just for basic savings, its unbelievable.

Anyway, if anyone has some suggestions for a safe investment that will meet the above please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

The best ‘safe’ investment is cash ISA. Other options - see ‘SAVINGS’ section.
Up-to-date information on cash ISAs - see this THREAD on the 'ISAs,..' sub-board.

And you would have to risk converting to dollars, riding the exchange rates. Also even if you were an american, 6% might not be that great - you have to consider the economy and the level of inflation, etc The grass isnt always greener
