bA tore mine. They upgraded us to 1st as an apology. We had to get a new one but took the hit as it was worth it.,

You will have to apply for a replacement passport. Write a letter explaining what you did and why - you may avoid an investigation. Tampering with passports is treated very seriously

My previous passport ran out of space and during the previous few years it had been in the sea, through jungles, lost and found in India and taken in and out of my back pocket many hundreds of times. And it showed, pages were stapled together, the cover was coming off and my photo page looked like I had made it the night before on photoshop. The only time I ever got questioned on it was entering Singapore on a dodgy airline from Indonesia. It probably went to some 40 countries countless times including the US several times and the Middle East including Israel.

The point I'm making is that border officials are made up of three types of people, jobsworths, those who dont care and the normal person doing a good job. But, all three of those people have one thing in common - They tend to know the difference between a dodgy passport and a genuine one.

It may be better if the OP accidentally left the passport in a pocket when they put their clothing in their washing machine.
They will still need to pay for a replacement and possibly send off the remnants of the old one, but it should avoid any possibility of an investigation over the tampering with the old one.
