Beware Hertz Hiring Process with Rentalcars.com

We recently used a Hertz hire car in Fuertaventura, booking it through rentalcars.com a large on line broker. It was a good deal at the time we booked.
We collected the keys etc at the airport main building and went to collect the car a few hundred yards away. There were no Hertz staff. The hire documents contained notes( not diagramme) of some scrataches/ scrapes. These turned out to be quite extensive. But the car was low mileage and in all other respects no problem.
On returning the car (again no staff in the car park) we returned the key and papers.
I confirmed to the one member of staff in the office that there was no additional damage and asked that he tear up our deposit slip. I said is that all now completed and he said it was and watched as he tore up a piece of paper.
A week later I received notification that we had been charged on our debit card over £190 for additional damage. I rang rentalcars.com and they said " you have insurance so not a problem". I responded that was not the point. Some one was mistaken about the damage and I wanted to complain. This I did and asked how the damage could be proved it was caused by us and other questions.
None of these was answered but instead I received notification that a claim had been made on my insurance and the sum would be paid. It has been.
But this is a fraud on the insurance because we caused no damage.Someone is making money out of this. BEWARE.
