But are there any MSE ways to stop, that don't involve paying for gel nails every fortnight? Other than will power or the 'tape over the fingertips' method which I tried when I was 10 and which would look really odd at work ...

Try Nailtiques no 2 formula, it's brilliant stuff. It's not cheap but Amazon small bottles. It works and its brilliant! I used to bite my nails to nothing. This stuff helps them grow quickly and stronger.

I've been a nail biter for 42 years and have finally stopped. The only method that worked for me was to paint them with nail polish.I used to bite them all the time and not even notice so having polish on would make me more aware of my nails nearing my mouth. I file any rough bits straight away.Polish every few days.Nail treatments as they are very weak and split.Cuticle oil as I do still nibble cuticles.I have 2 nails that grow less than the others. They are all a horrible shape-they don't curve down nicely but grow up/straight and are wider at the end.The nail bed is also very short but I've read that it may reattach as the nail grows.I find I have to use a coloured polish-clear doesn't work for me.

Burts Bees lemon cubical balm is really good too, when I remember to put it on.
  • Glad to hear you kicked the habit :) I too now have nice long nails. Have not bitten for around 8 weeks now.
Started with acrylics for 2 weeks and then they were long enough for shellac. I now have shellac and will continue this until my nails are strong enough to go it alone :)
