Virgin Mobile vs Giff Gaff Sim Only deal

Well, I'm glad this old thread has been resurrected, because I am in almost exactly the same situation as the OP.
iPhone 4S (but on EE network). Still got a short contract period to go. Phone now unlocked -EE nightmare - but that's another story.
Am comparing GiffGaff and Virgin Mobile.
The Virgin £7 SIM would have been unbeatable if calls from Virgin Mobile to Virgin Landline were free. Unsure of the 30 day rolling contract - I can opt out at any time, but would need to contact on e of their 'overseas' call centres to stop the contract.
GiffGaff, not quite so competitive as Virgin on the face of it, but I like the fact that I have to proactively top up every month to keep the service, rather than have to be proactive in getting out, if that makes sense.
BTW, already have a Giffgaff sim at home - needed something to check my phone was unlocked. How long a shelf life does the sim have before activation?0
