When I opened my account with Childs I spoke to them on the telephone. Signed all the paperwork and they sent me a Childs cheque book and the gold coloured debit card.
  • Is there a minimum "richness" status needed to be a Child & Co client?

I know Adam & Co only waive the £40 per month fee if you have liquid assets over £250,000 I think.

Do they charge a monthly fee? They seem to have no web presence. Very Old School. Imagine the service is very good.

No monthly fee except I pay for the royalties gold which is standard RBS stuff.

Service is good, not exceptional but good. It's not Coutts.

I think they used to be very good (pre RBS takeover) but were shafted as a company.
  • I find this quite astonishing that you (I) can apply for a Private Bank (Exclusive?) Child & Co account by simply selecting Child & Co as the holding branch!!

I have a modest income and not a massive amount of savings. Definitely under £250,000 and have been accepted.

    Very Odd.

Indeed, although my experience of holding the account (since 2009), is that it is literally identical to my NatWest current plus account, bar the gold debit card and fancy cheque book.

They've even introduced the same crap changes to T&Cs this month with relation to overdrafts!!

So what will I received from this application? The chequebook shown in the above photo and the RBS debit card mentioned here or the official Child & Co one?

I telephoned Child & Co and there was no 0845 number and press 1,2,3 and enter your account number PIN and date of birth then the onslaught of hold music. It's like going back to basics and the good old days.

Being a private bank does the Child & Co account feature as a reported credit account on your CRA file do you know?

It would seem that if it's a full account with offline debit card, you'd get the C&C branded gold one...that's the one I've always had, with £250 cheque guarantee before that was axed, and since reissued the same without it, along with the cheque book pictured. Might be that if it's only got the online debit card (no idea if C&C even issue these) then you might get the RBS branded card?

It does appear on my CRA files (all three agencies), appears as "RBS Current Accounts" (although lenders can't see who it's from, just that it's a current account). Also reports the overdraft limit.

EDIT: Oh, and your statements will be on C&C branded paper, rather than RBS, and your correspondence from RBS will be branded "RBS Private" :D

The acquisition of the NatWest Group in 2000 established Coutts as the private banking arm of The Royal Bank of Scotland.
