I gave it a try once, but TBH - didn't feel any benefit. OH has IB and has acidophilus tablets - when he remembers to take them. My old GP used to swear by taking them as, like my OH, he had a wheat intolerance. For myself, would rather save my money and eat yoghurt.

We started taking it when hubby was diagnosed with Diviticular disease. He swears by it, so do I, but wonder if it can be cut from the shop bill. Something I never thought about before joining this board!

Do you eat a 'good diet' - I suppose I mean plenty of fruit and veg and low on refined foods. Do you eat live yogurt?

I would rather eat the contents of my bin than a yoghurt or one of these drinks (a throwback to pregnancy sickness) so I know that the tablets are always there if I'm on antibiotics.

Not everybody can stomach these foods but they are really helpfull if on antibiotics.
Just run, run and keep on running!

Think you might get more than a few friendly bacteria if you ate the contents of your bin.:D

The drinks are either a waste of time or less than a waste of time...............you need to take your 'friendly bacteria' in tablet form (but better through your diet obviously)
or by the time it reaches your gut .........it's not worth taking and your just throwing your money away.

most of them don't even contain what they say on the label:o

"Multibionta has been tested by Professor Hamilton-Miller and his team who confirmed it contains exactly what it says on the label. It is also enteric coated to protect the ingredients during their passage through the gut. "

i remeber trying a free sample of yakult years back when they first became popular, and conclusively say it is without a doubt the most disgusting tasting thing i have ever had the displeasure to put in my mouth thus far.

needless to say, i've never been brave enough to try another one since. the in-laws tried them just after new year, when we were all feeling groggy and run down, but in terms of recovery, i dont think me and the OH did any worse going on a healthy burst and intensify our intake of fruit and veg and not having the probiotic stuff.

personally, whilst i dont deny they can make a difference, i think it is often a psychological thing as much as anything. in my humble opinion, i reckon you feel much better for knowing that you are doing something positive to take care of your body, and this has a knock on effect of releasing happy-make-you-feel-good-and-healthy hormones etc etc.

TBH I think that to take these things on a regular basis may not be as helpful as taking them when they are actually needed, so if a member of the family is on antibiotics then I buy the Yakult drinks to take during the course, the drinks must have an effect as in our Hospital Yakult is prescribed on the prescription for patients on long term antibiotics and as I said they were recommended on the Infection Control Seminar

I have to add, that I was put on a 6 month course of anti-biotics by a dentist once and it basically gave me ME ( as diagnosed by a GP). I would have willingly taken yakult or any other probiotic etc to save me the problems I had.

I've got IBS and I find Yakult helps settle that down. I don't take it all the time though, and just buy 2-3 weeks worth when I have a bad attack. That works for me. It's too expensive to drink everyday IMO.
Here I go again on my own....
