I'm not sure if another thread has been started so I'm reviving this one!
I have been awful for throwing food away recently and it is horrifying me!!:o In the past, I have found this thread really helpful and saved a fortune as a result, I really need to embrace it again
I am going to do a reccie of my fridge and plan stuff that uses up the fresh stuff in the house, then work my way through the cupboards and freezer - I have £100 in my grocery purse and I am going to make it last as long as possible....who knows what we'll end up eating! :rotfl:Mortgage 12.12.12 £55842 12.12.13 £42716 14.12.14 £28837 13.12.15 £25913

Hi, I have just come across this thread and would love to join (actually desperately need to join!).
I always seem to be throwing food out which makes me feel awful with all the starving people around and also makes me realise that I may as well just be throwing away cash!
I am going to start by going through my two fridges and making a list of everything in there and the use by dates to ensure it is all used up/frozen before going out of date
Thanks for the inspirationMortgage - £2338.07 paid off Feb 2023 BTL 1 £51,089.10 £35789.36 paid off July 2025 BTL 2 £81,504.52 BTL 3 £77,497.020 -

The real trick I think is to buy little and often particularly in regards to fresh food. If you can try and buy locally from a local green grocer so you get maybe more expensive fruit but you might find it last a lot longer than what the supermarkets sell.
Next try and avoid buying anything until you have cleared the fridge. If you have two fridges if you do not buy until you have emptied both you might also find you can turn off the second fridge and save electricity as well. I will try and run my fridge as empty as possible. It means that I only have a few days food in at any time so will use up any thing in there before buying anything new. Another trick is to batch cook and freeze as much as possible. You can then take out food the night before. I will also portion out any cooked food into smaller food containers which makes it easy to work out how many meals I have in the fridge and then freeze excess, that stops it being thrown away. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
Meal planning helps you with cutting down on waste. If you and surplus I always put it in the freezer whilst it's still useable. If I buy a large loaf I freeze half due to only being the 2 of us that was we have fresher bread. Why pay full price when you may get it YS0

The cereal bag is great for crushing biscuits or for using to freeze portions for the freezer( cleaned out first!)0 -
I keep thinking to make soup from veg peelings, you know, the stuff that usually goes in the bin or on the compost heap. Chucked away a good part of a pineapple the other day, probably could have made up a smoothie added to home made yogurt. Smackie wrist.
Hi there recipe for veggie peelings soup please
I usually have the outside leaves of a cauli, the peelings from carrots, potato's and the outside leaves of cabbage,The broccolli stalks I sometimes freeze sliced up to get chucked into veggie soups, casseroles etc0 -
JACKIE - I'd never thought of this before and, out of curiosity, I have just googled veg peel soup. Surprisingly it brought up quite a selection of recipes. However, I think I would rather wait for someone to post a tried and tested recipe! Anyone as it sounds quite a good idea?"If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0

What you do with veggie peelings is vegetable stock! Add all your peelings, carrot tops, too hard cabbage and leek leaves, woody pieces of celery etc to a bag or container in the fridge, or even in the freezer if you are on your own and it takes ages to collect a good cupful. Then when you have enough put it all to boil with a few pieces of onion, a couple of bay leaves or any other herbs, and simmer until all the veg are soft. Strain and compost the veg leftover and use the stock for soups, if you want you can even sieve the veg pressing with a woiden spoon to extract any pulp (but then the stock will be cloudy). Add salt and pepper to taste. You could even serve it as a hot drink in winter, a vegge consomm!!Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0
