I definately need to be on board with this, my fridge needs a major clear out in next day or so I'm sure there'll be loads lurking that will end up at the tip. It's horrifying! Xxx
  • Hi all, I definitely want to do this this year. So far this year I have thrown out about 3 slices of bread that had gone mouldy. That was quite annoying but it happened without me noticing, will definitely keep an eye on the bread situation from now on. There are only two of us here and we don't always eat it every day, so I might start halving the loaf and freezing half. I've also thrown out veg peelings, which I need to figure out what to do with. The only thing I've had to use up so far before it going off was some buttermilk, I made some yummy pancakes and froze them for another day. The only problem I have is that our freezer is really quite small, it's an integrated one so most of the space is taken up by the cupboard! I would like to get another one as I like batch cooking etc but we have nowhere to keep it.

I am looking forward to this challenge though - keep up the good work everyone! :T

Things are going well on the peelings front, freezing them as I go.
And keeping old teabags for greenhouse pot drainage and cleaning greasy pans.
  • I've never heard of using tea bags for drainage in pots or for cleaning greasy pans. You learn something new every day. I do recycle mine into the compost bin though.

I am making a slow cooker chicken curry tonight and will be adding into it the half of a butternut squash that is lurking in the veg drawer in the bottom of the fridge. There are some sprouts in the fridge that will not be getting used before they spoil as OH's colitis is troubling him and they will only make it worse at the moment so will prep them and freeze in small portions.

I have thrown away half of a HM loaf of bread so I also need to rethink the bread situation. It was possibly because I had not sliced it. Slicing bread seems to be a chore to everyone in the house except me so I need to remember to slice the next one and see if that one gets used up.
I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order :D.

We had the same problem when our DS first left home, he used to have about half a loaf each day as toast for breakfast, but OH and I don't use much, so after throwing away a few whole loaves that had gone mouldy, I started freezing the whole loaf and taking out just what we need when we want to have some, or toasting from frozen.

I'm going to join this challenge, I haven't binned any food so far this year and I'll try to keep it to a minimum from now on. We did have some cornflakes, which have been open since about June and had a BBE of November last year, which had gone stale so they were thrown out for the birds this morning. I'm hoping to use some veg tomorrow for a root veg crumble, and anything that doesn't get used for that will be put in the freezer to save it being wasted.

    Agree with you there Jan.

I was cooking some frozen runnerbeans yesterday. HM grown in the garden. I noticed the frozen beans I had put in a recycled cereal bag.

This morning I made an egg sandwich for breakfast.
I cut the crusts off the bread on x2 sides (have this brilliant idea that less bread is more slimming). The x2 crusts went in the dog bowl.
Most things have to go past the dog before the bin.

Am still saving egg shells for the garden, to scatter around base of plants.
And know not food ...BUT all newspapers (free to me from family) go to the Rotary Club. They sell them to stables for horse bedding.

Just bought a cheap swede from Lidl 39p. Also steamed the peel, which will go into the soup freezer bag. It's all go.
