I threw out most of a large carton of rice milk today. I'm going to buy the smaller ones now as I don't want too much at a time. Just because it seems better value to buy larger packets doesn't always make it so.

The one I threw out was a lot out of date and didn't look too good even though I had a little of it on some cereal.

Hey nice to see you here :) Nice idea with the apple, yum!

YS means Yellow Sticker - reduced, also know as a whoopsie. I'm still figuring out the stock thing myself but I save carrot, onion and celery ends in a bag in the freezer for stock. I personally don't save peelings unless it's organic veg but some people put peelings in stock too :) I also freeze chicken carcasses and bones from drumsticks for making stock when I can't make it right away then freeze the stock once I've made it.

I was doing the same with meal planning and not factoring in the leftover ingredients and am trying to do the same as you when planning. Good luck! ^_^

Thank you for this, really helpful. I never buy things from the reduced section, not because I don't want to, because I never think about it! I'm going to make a concious effort to look at these sections now and buy stuff from there (providing I can use it of course :)) as it will help cut shopping bills too.

My first day on this challenge didn't go so well yesterday, as I went home and found a portion of vegetable soup i'd made a couple of weeks ago that i'd forgotten about! I think the vegetables were getting to their last legs then so I had to chuck it out. I'd made a batch of it so most of it got eaten, it was just this protion that got wasted. I'd estimate it's cost was a round 20p. On the plus side I used up some tomatoes making two portions of tomato soup, one of which i've just had for lunch today and the other I think I will freeze for now. I also put the onion ends from the soup into the freezer to keep for stock. :T

Does anybody have any ideas what to do with raspberries and blueberries that are on their last legs?

Don't want a pie or anything - it must be healthy (ish) Is there anything that can be done to preserve them?

    Mash them into a yogurt

How about whizzing up with a little milk or yogurt into a smoothie? I have seen some recipes for healthier blueberry breakfast muffins too. Or make them into a compote to go on porridge?

It's not often that I have to admit throwing away food that I've bought - but afraid that over the past few days, some of my salad stuff has escaped me.

Thrown out OOD stuff: majority of bag of mixed Salad (70p) / 1 pot of SP Coleslaw (25p) / 1 pot of SP Potato Salad (35p) / 2 sections of SP unused dips from a pack of 4 (49p) - thank goodness they were only SP or it would have 'broken my heart' at the cost :o. Total - £1.79

These were more than 'a couple of days' OOD - otherwise they would have just been consumed anyway. I'm blaming the freezing cold weather making me not want salad food :(.

Thought it was going too well - dug deep into the depths of my fridge and threw some bits out which were well past their best  and found a couple of bits lurking at the bottom of the fruit bowl too. At least I'm aware of what's going on now, so can try to keep on top of it so it's not all negative is it.

  • Hello x I've just been lurking here and rather than setting a budget I have just been trying to be mindful of using things up / freezing instead of throwing out. I think I'm doing quite well so far.. I keep logging on here to see your inspiring tips so thanks very much for the help! :)
However I've just frozen a lamb leg leftover from a joint and some scrappy bits that were left for it. it's not enough meat to do anything proper with but I must must be able to find a use for it.. just wondering if you clever people had any ideas? xxx thanks in advance xx

  • Busy day today! Bought a YS chicken last night even though I knew there was no room in the freezer, roasted it this morning and made chicken noodle soup 2-3 portions, striped it into sandwich/soup/salad meat and put the carcass with my other one, the defrosted carrot and chicken ends and the tops of tonight's spring onions into the stock pot, made about 4-6 pints of stock! Only problem is I didn't have enough freezer pots, hoping to squeeze the two pots into the freezer and will have to make more soup on Monday. Also made some plum compote, one pot sweet for breakfasts and other being turned into savoury plum sauce for tonight's dinner. My counter is full of cooling bowls and pots right now lol

  • I signed up for this challenge and have hardly had any time for reading it all. I'm sorry. I know I've gone way over though. I think I posted £5 originally. This is what we've thrown away this month:

2 half bottles of cocktail mixers I found in the back of a cupboard when decluttering. They had been open for over a year so I didn't want to risk it.

    400g of yoghurt went mouldy

    A piece of cooked chicken

A quarter of a loaf of bread.

I think my lesson learnt is that I need to do a stock check of the fridge every week, probably when I do my menu plan. That way I won't forget about things we have.
