Hello
My relationship of 10 years ended recently and I am back at my parents house after many years away while I try to start a new life as Ive been left with nothing.
My parents are pensioners and recieve some of their rent on their privately rented house and council tax paid, along with disability because my mother is disabled. I am self employed and work from home.
If I stay here for say six months will any of their benefits be jeapordised,
particularly like the rent or council tax?
Any advice appreciated
Thanks

There will be a non-dependant reduction from their housing and council tax benefit based on your income
here is a table with examples http://www.waveney.gov.uk/site/scripts/documents_info.php?documentID=608&categoryID=200008&pageNumber=30 -
So if previously you had received housing benefit and two people lived in the home, but now a third person moves back in, one who cannot claim any housing benefit because they are moving back in with their parents, the parents have to give up some of their housing benefit and council tax benefit? Why? It doesn't make sense. The person moving back in is family so can't claim any housing benefit. Presumably the people already living there have the same housing costs to pay regardless of how many family members moved back in with them.0

The assumption is that op is paying keep. Otherwise you can have someone earning say £100k pa getting a free house.
The household is now not reliant in benefits and so they expect a very small contribution towards the rent. It's not a lot to ask really.0 -
Whatever your parents lose in benefits while you are there, is what you pay them so that they can continue as they were. However you also need to pay something for utilities and food etc.0

If your parents get Pension Credit, or the care component of either DLA or AA your presence in their home will not affect their HB/CTB.
See http://www.dwp.gov.uk/publications/specialist-guides/technical-guidance/rr2-a-guide-to-housing-benefit/what-you-can-claim-for/non-dependants/0 -
It's also worth mentioning that if one of your parents is over 65, the deduction will be delayed for 26 weeks.I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.

But if the person moving back home is also dependent on benefits, why would the rent allowance for three people be less than for two? The JSA isn't designed to cover rent. And the person moving back home can't get housing benefit on their own account because they are moving back home as opposed to moving in with strangers/friends.0 -

Then this would be discounted. OP is however, working, that is why0
