Sky + PIN puzzle.

Options
My wife recorded a restricted 12 programme from Sky and when she tried to watch it at 13:00 yesterday, it asked for the PIN.

Of course no one could remember what it was, it wasn't the last 4 digits of the viewing card, or of even changing it from the default.

So after spending ages on saynoto0844 looking for alternative numbers that didn't get a Sky announcement of, we have stopped another phone number that doesn't make us money, I phoned the 0844 number.

After going through their money making security procedures I was told that at some time in the past the PIN had been changed and I was told what it was.

I of course then remembered changing it to something easy to remember and after checking that it was the correct PIN I ended the call.

The puzzle, how did Sky know what I had changed the PIN to?

As far as I can remember the Sky + box has never been connected to the phone line since it was installed, so how did the information get to Sky?

What are you on about? Communication via the dish is one way only - receive, there is no capability whatsoever of transmitting back via the satellite. All communication between Sky and the digibox is via the phone connection with exception of requests over the internet for On Demand downloads.

The only ways the PIN can be changed is via the phone connection or via a voice phone call to Sky or on the MySky website.

I often wondered what the red laser beam I occasionally saw pointing up to the sky from the dish was for.
