Best time to buy long haul flights?

Thinking of a family trip to New Zealand in 2014, dates are flexible but will have to include Feb half term holidays. Looking at approx 4 weeks stay.
Wanting to fly Man to Akl, plus will need an internal flight in Nz
Have signed up for major airlines newsletters so I am emailed details of specials.
It's 5 years since we made this trip, do airlines still release fares about 10 months in advance?
Happy to pay in full I advanced if it means getting the best deal /price.

Have a quick chat to Trailfinders to see how far in advance they can book-I think TA can book further out than normal people. How far out depends on the airline, some allow 11 months.
At this early stage may be a good idea to see what choice you have\would like.
Economy in most airlines is similar but on a long haul journey small differences could be key, such as stopover cities, more up to date a\c. Flight times etc.
MSE tip.
Flying from a NON UK airport (DUB? AMS) can save you £'s-Though you have to weigh up the hassle factor.
Also which way round are you going?0 -
Thanks will give them a ring.
Not bothered which way we go, have been via Us and Far East in past.
Is earliest the cheapest?0 -

How long's a piece of string?
Feb is their "Summer" so possibly a peak(ish) time so fares maybe high and no bargains around.
Have a look to see what is a "reasonable" fare to NZ in Feb (I'm guessing £800 minimum) and then see what TF offer for next year.
One good thing wth booking early is that you can then plan the rest of the holiday as dates are fixed. Also if you pay in full then by the time of your holiday the major expense is paid.
One BAD thing is that you should NEVER look again at the fares:eek:
Look at options such as free stopovers-Open Jaw flights (Into AKL out of Wellington?) etc to minimise cost.0
