new modem question/advice

sky are sending us out a new modem FOC.
Basically the one we have now is about 5 years old. With the WiFi is still works fine as long as you are closer to it it, it just seems that the signal distance is not what it used to be. As a result in some rooms the signal drops all the time or you can't get it at all.
Now for the question. Would there be any advantage to using both? I was wondering if the old one could be placed in another room, plugged into power but not a phone line. Could it then 'piggy back' the other ones WiFi to act as a booster as there was always one room with patchy signal (opposite corner of the house to the modem).
Or is that just being silly?

Were you advised to change the channel on the old router?
Did they ask you to locate the router away from possible interference sources like Dect base stations.
You could check for interference using inSSIDer, a free download.
...and no its not possible to use the old router as a wireless relay. You can get wireless extenders though.

Hi and thanks for the reply.
I had already tried inssider and checked for interference, changed channel a couple of times Also moved it to a couple of different places and always had the same result, different rooms would have signal depending where it was (nearest rooms ok) but unable to cover whole house when it used to do it no problem.
I'll wait till the new one arrives and see how it is, I'll take a look at the extender link cheers.0 -
\No worries I've got the new Sky hub and it does seem to have a slightly better wireless range than the old SagemThat gum you like is coming back in style.0

Well my new router is in and its a very noticeable difference.
More coverage, much more stable a connection and its actually giving a slightly faster download rate.
Happy for now then.0 -
if you got a smartphone there is a free app called
Wifi Analyzer
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5mYXJwcm9jLndpZmkuYW5hbHl6ZXIiXQ..
which will show which channels are the most used/jammed up my wifi kept having same issues dropping out after getting this baby could see which channels where most clogged and discovered no one and mean no one in my area was using 13 switched to that and have never ever had a drop out since in last 2 years since switching amazing amount of people had moved but only a couple of channels either way.
use this and think you should see a huge improvement once knowing the facts rather than guessing which channel is free.
hope this helps out abit
