Anything less than 6 months is asking for trouble UNLESS it is an EU destination.

You do not need more than 6 months when going to the US.

My husband & dad had 3 & 5 months left and we had no problems a few weeks back.

You haven't looked at the information properly- 6 months is automatically added on for certain countries, the UK being one of them. It's pretty funny because you just posted the link to it !

I've been recently to Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Bosnia, Macedonia and Croatia with a passport that was on the verge of expiring. They couldn't have cared less. None of those countries (except Croatia) are entering the EU anytime soon - and two of them have rather poor relations with the EU!

I travelled on an expired passport back in 1988 from Greece through comunist Yugoslavia, Germany and Netherlands with no trouble. Because of passport delays most countries added an ectra six months onto ecpired passports. Wouldn't recommend it now of course but a passport covering all dates would be all that many countries would need.
