Dunno what's happened to the store, but it's turned into something that resembles a mobile phone accessories shop, just posher! Lots of expensive headphones, tablets, ipads, phones, some blu ray players.

So, I have a look around, find the DVD and walk out. It's £9! And that was in the "big sale".

    £3 in Asda.

What on earth happened to HMV? And can it survive? Was a mixture of everything, master of nothing, and very very expensive comparable to shops around it. Who would buy stuff there?

I think you've largely answered your own question. A shop dedicated to selling mainstream music/films can't survive when it's competing against online sellers and supermarkets which can afford to make nominal profit on entertainment sales due to all other revenue streams.

Thus HMV has tried to diversify into products that it can make enough of a margin on and that physical access is important for shoppers.
Having a signature removed for mentioning the removal of a previous signature. Blackwhite bellyfeel double plus good...

Just how long can this store last?

    10 days apparently.

    :(

Worse, the asset strippers from Comet have taken over.

Well HMV have outlasted Virgin Megastores, Fopp and Zavvi, and are a diverse group, not just a chain of 300 stores.

I think they are doing fine.

Oops, who else is doing fine Mistic Meg

seems there were a few companies holding out until after christmas ...... as said before i wonder who will be next...

i dont personally see HMV and Comet closure as a result of the downturn, just not keeping up with developments online and how people prefer to shop...

I was wondering this as well. If the gift card was bought with credit or debit card, can the person who bought it for me claim the money back from the bank as a chargeback?

It's now easier to buy crack than a CD in your average town centre, that can't be a good thing.

Its a shame. I like HMV, I find obscure dvd's that I would not have heard of without them. Its not like I can google 'wierd b movie that I might like' and have any real chance of finding what I am after.
