Bye bye HMV?

Just how long can this store last?

Went in there today for the first time in ages. My son has ruined his Despicable Me DVD which he loves, so thought I'd pick him up another.

Dunno what's happened to the store, but it's turned into something that resembles a mobile phone accessories shop, just posher! Lots of expensive headphones, tablets, ipads, phones, some blu ray players.

And a corned for CD's and DVDs etc.

So, I have a look around, find the DVD and walk out. It's £9! And that was in the "big sale".

£3 in Asda.

What on earth happened to HMV? And can it survive? Was a mixture of everything, master of nothing, and very very expensive comparable to shops around it. Who would buy stuff there?

I think its more popular with the younger crowd.

A lot of the stuff you can buy in supermarkets, but I think when teens go into town shopping they would tend to go to HMV rather than Asda or Sainsburys.

I happened to be in Game today an was surprised just how busy that was, continuous queues at checkout with a variety of hardware, peripherals and games being purchased.

Several things were more competitively priced than either the big T & A supermarkets or the ubiquitous Currys/PC world.

It is quite disturbing the lack of real choice on the high street. I know we have lost two retailers on our local retail park, the consequenc ebeing that the last remaining one never seems to have any stock for "urgent" purchases.

I remember HMV in the days you could leaf through vinyl.

  • They can't compete with online music/film sales/downloads so are moving into other areas - I don't think they will last much longer

Is 1911 your date of birth
    :D

HMV shares are due to die a death sometime in the spring. The banks will own sell it to someone I guess. Jessops in theory failed its owners but still retails ?
Game as mentioned is still going as a brand but in theory also failed to make profits.

Lots of retail is in trouble unless they are very clever. Too many levels of competition, it doesnt make too much sense to be paying for high street property if people are prepared to buy right out of the warehouse enmasse ala amazon

Interestingly I have recently needed to purchase a number of small electrical appliances and the high street/supermarket has been cheaper in all instances than the internet and Amazon.

I think Amazon is losing it's edge in some areas.

Our permanent HMV store closed years ago, but for the past 2 years or so we've had a "pop up" version for the festive season.

A lot of the stuff is overpriced yes, but you can get stuff that you can't get in the supermarket.

I am not sure how Game have managed to survive. A particular DS game I wanted they were selling was £29.99, I got it from Amazon for £14.99!

Amazon will always beat stores for certain items at given times. Timing is often part of the reason, they can often bounce around, in price, a bit.

I have just purchased a 32GB SDHC micro card, from an online well known memory place for £15, it was more expensive from Amazon and twice the price in Tesco today. I know they are conveneience purchases, in somewhere like Tesco, but twice the price?
