So glad to hear that you didn't go for the Hotpoint Aqualtis 11Kg machine with the steam clean function. I have had the Hotpoint AQ113D697 for a few months now and I hate it! I was taken in by the idea of the huge drum and consequently the huge capacity, but it turns out that only a very few of the cycles are made for the full 11Kg capacity and most take the usual 6Kg. Not only that but the standard wash cycles are 3 - 3.5 hours long! My old Bosch used to wash half the volume in less than an hour so I could have run 3 cycles in the time that it takes to do one in the new Hotpoint!

Also I have discovered that it is pointless talking about washing in terms of weight - it should be in volume. Accourding to the manual of my machine, a pair of jeans weighs around 0.5Kg. In theory I should therefore be able to wash 22 pairs of jeans in one 11Kg load (it is the dry weight that matters here, not he wet). This is of course nonsense (even if we had 22 pairs of jeans in the family), because the maxiumum volume of teenager/adult size jeans that I can fit into the massive drum with a hand's width left at the top is about 8 pairs (which should be about 4Kg).

I did once try and see what 11Kg of mixed washing looks like by piling laundry into a washing basket on my bathroom scales but 2 massive baskets full was nowhere near 11Kg and was over twice as much as would have actually fitted in the drum!
  • Just to add that my own 9kg LG washer / dryer came out of 2 years guarantee in December and I have gone for an offered £4 a month insurance policy as it was around half the cost of any other policy I could find.

In the 2 years I have owned it, there have been 3 call outs (plus 2nd calls for each incident), hence the need for insurance.

If I didn't need the dryer or wanted separate machines, I would go for the biggest. All have quick washes, so I don't know why people complain about washing times and if you are washing 12kg instead of 6kg then you'd expect it to take longer wouldn't you ?

I use the overnight wash / dry mode quite a lot on Economy 7.

Now if Miele offered a 10kg plus washer dryer ..... but I would certainly consider a Panasonic if they come back with the 5 years parts and labour guarantee. I'd then flog it I reckon.

Well, machine was delivered 1.30pm (appliances direct gave me 4hr time-slot 11-3 but their own drivers called me 30 mins prior). Instructions read, installed and programmed by myself alone in approximately 1hr as it took me a while to get the transportation bolts out. Half way through a quick wash cycle already so hubby is most grateful he doesn't have to deal with it after work. It is hugely quieter than my last washer, a relatively expensive Hoover model. So far so good......

Once you've had a large washing machine, you'll never go back to tiddly 6kg stuff :)

Although I said above that I hate my big machine, the steam function is great, particularly as I have a son with severe asthma and steaming the duvet is a good way of killing dust mites. As it is a singe duvet I can wash it and add the steam option at the end and after the 1600 rpm spin it feels virtually dry when it is finished so only needs a short time in the dryer or a day on the airer in front of the fire.
