Advice Please!12kg Samsung Eco Bubble washing machine v.s 11kg LG Steam Direct Drive?

Hello
I'm looking for any advice to help me choose which is best, the 12kg Samsung Eco Bubble or the 11kg LG Steam Direct Drive Washing Machine?----or any alternative anyone could suggest---

I have found both around £700 which feels excessive so I need something that is likely to last. I have no experience with either manufacturer.

I have a large family so require the large capacity, plus would like to be able to wash super-king duvets in it. Would I need the 12kg capacity for a super-king duvet? Is the steam feature on the LG really worth it?

Any advice gratefully received as my washing machine died on Christmas Eve so i'm becoming desperate!!!

Many thanks

    Hi Liz

For £700 you can get a proper washing machine!;)

Really don't look at anything in this £700 to £1200 market other than Miele. Any Miele will give you the long life you are looking for and wash better than virtually anything else.

Don't be fooled by these huge stated load capacities, for a machine to give you a decent wash at these high loads it would need a much bigger drum, therefore the machine would need to be bigger and you would be looking at commercial machines then.

Can't comment on whether steam is worth it on the LG but what I can say is that steam is fantastic on the V-Zug washing machine, it reduces your ironing by over a half. Now if you truly want the best washing machine in the world then I think V-Zug takes that title!

We have the 9kg LG steam Direct Drive, had it for a few years now with no problems.

Very quiet due to the direct drive and seems to wash very well.
Wash cycles can take a long time, especially with steam and other options turned on, but as it is a large load it is not too much of a problem.

Never managed to reach the 9kg limit (it weighs the load when you start it up) only ever got to 7kg and that was ramming it full. :shhh:
It easily takes our king size quilt.

I think it has a larger drum but the overall size is about the same due to the direct drive taking less internal space. The machine fits in a standard sized hole but is a bit deeper so protrudes by about 1"
  • No machine will properly wash a king size duvet (unless its a thin summer one maybe) as there won't be room inside the drum for it to move around which is an important part of the wash cycle. Eitehr steam clean duvets or take them to a suitable dry cleaning / laundry place with commercial sized machines

Miele are great as long as you get a decent long guarantee as they do not automatically come with 10 years like they used to. Also consider Siemens with a 5 year guarantee.

Have heard plenty of good things about the LG direct drive machines and I would imagine a decent steam generator would be a very useful feature

It does steam clean, that's why it is an LG Steam Direct Drive!
  • I know yours does which is why my post was in general reply and not quoting yours.
However saying that no domestic machine will properly wash a king size duvet , there simply isn't enough room for movement as already posted - how well yours steam cleans a duvet I don't know - surely it won't reach the inner parts which will be all folded or rolled inside each other as its squeezed in?

Seems to clean it perfectly adequately, with a lot less hassle and cost than taking it to a dry cleaners. Works for me. :D
  • If you are happy with what it does then that's great and ignoring the well covered "large duvet debate" I would guess that steam cleaning has a lot of useful advantages for certain garments, especially other bedding for removal of dust mites etc.

The duvet question aside, the OP asked about two manufacturers of which they had no experience. I have owned a large capacity (non steam as it got bad reviews when I researched it) LG for about 4 years now, and it's great. Quiet on the fast spins, and economical with low water use and programmable to do overnight washes. Samsung appear to have a finger in EVERY pie and perhaps spread themselves a bit too thin, as I could not find many good reviews about their products, so plumped with the LG after seeing that it came with a 2 year warranty as standard.

    Hope that helps.

We have an ECO-Bubble Samsung. Not the 12Kg (think ours is 9kg) variety but still, similar technology.

I must admit, it is very good. Even delicate clothes it washes with no real problems I've seen.

10 year warranty on the drive and as we brought it through Costco we've got their concierge service as well so I think it is around a 5 year warranty on the machine as a whole. Eco-bubble is a nice trick, and it seems to use barely any water compared to the old machine ( I haven't bothered to measure it, as we just had a bill from the water company and they have dropped the DD as consumption is lower than expected - Winner)

I like Samsung goods, so I am slightly biased but I think the ECO-bubble stuff is dead good, plus is has a cleaning function which run every couple of weeks should see the machine good for use for years yet.

Thanks for all of the replies. I've gone for the LG. I bought through Appliances Online in order to get free delivery; they price matched RGB Direct and Price Factor who would both have charged me for delivery and also gave me a discount equivalent to the cash-back I would have received had I purchased online via Quidco. Delivery on Friday!!
