Switching runaround

Hi
I am currently trying to switch to sky from virginmedia (phone tv & broadband). I asked sky what I need to do, they said get a mac code from my current provider. I asked my current provider for one, they said they dont supply them as its not an ADSL to ADSL switch, not a good start with my new provider. Is this correct?
Also, is it best to just cancel my current provider and then place an order with the new one, or just place the order first, obviously I dont want to end up paying for two for any time nor do I wish to be without. How does it all work?

you cant switch from a cable line to a ADSL service over a BT line. The new provider will have to provide ADSL from scratch on your BT line (i'm assuming you have one at the property)0
