Car stolen need to hire one cheaply?

My car was stolen Christmas eve morning :(
Apparently I only get a courtesy car if mine is in for repair :(
No news from the police yet & my Dad says if it doesn't turn up it could be 4 to 6 weeks before they decide it's not coming back & I need a car for work, so am looking at hiring - I've seen lease ones for 28 days which seem to be the cheapest, but are there any pitfalls?
Any advice welcome.
thanks
(be nice I know nothing about cars!)

Where are the keys and do you have both supplied chipped keys in your possession.

The OP isn't asking for advice on key management issues, they re asking for advice on car hire.

Have you thought about buying a cheap car until its sorted? Maybe a lot cheaper than car hire.

My mate had his car stolen from outside our house in London a few years back and we drove around the local streets and estates and found it parked up outside a block of flats, undamaged. He used his key to drive it home.

    Might be worth a punt.

  • I did think about it, but then if I get my car back, I have 2 cars, plus I have to insure & tax it, wouldn't it work out more expensive?

Ask the Insurers as many Insurers do not wait the 6 weeks they used to allow for the car to turn up.

While you speak to them ask about car hire as some of the larger Insurers allow their customers to use Enterprise at preferential rates

Have thought about it but have had a crappy cold since boxing day so not really up to it, may do tomorrow but think it'll be a needle in a haystack as there are housing estates & industrial estates nearby - could be anywhere!

You are assuming you will get your car back. Do not assume this. If you do, you can send the tax back for a refund and you can sell the car, probably for what you paid for it, so I may be a lot less than hiring a car.

Buy a cheap runabout. Probably cheaper than hiring a car.

Just look on ebay for something with 6 months tax and MOT.

Is this only in cases like this or could I try ringing my insurer and ask them nicely to hire me a car cheaply? :D
