  • It all comes down to the industry you want to work in and your employer.
I spent a few years working as a receptionist in a tattoo studio and I seen people from all walks of life getting tattoos from bankers to doctors and even police officers. As long as you get them in places you could cover for work then it shouldn't matter.
I work in retail now and myself along with several other colleagues have tattoos on show whilst at work, I've yet to come across someone who has taken 'offence' to my work. Well anyone who's been brass enough to say anything ;)

In my experience, I have always found alternative people to just be generally well rounded and nicer people... Although I have always felt warmer towards us 'freaks' :D

If you don't wish to be judged for your tattoos and piercings (rightly so) why would you think its ok to judge people who don't have them as less nice?

Tolerance has to work both ways OP.

Bah i've had purple hair since 2007...so if i'm being fashionable that means i started the trend..!

I had purple hair in 2001, but I think David Bowie beat us both by a long way.

I'm all for letting people look how they want to look without being judged for it, but the 'alternative' look is neither new nor particularly alternative I'm afraid. ;)

I have *counts* 22 piercings and I have at least 4 more planned. But none are facial (well, I have 2 in my mouth and my septum done) and although I have stretched ears if you didn't know you wouldn't know. In fact, I work in a customer facing role and I actually get compliments on my earrings. Everyone loved my Christmas trees.

I would love cheek piercings, but I won't get them because of my job.

Also, times change... 15 years ago virtually no rugby players had tattoos now a large proportion of forwards have tribal type tattoos on one or both arms.

I also hate the way ink fades and, personally, think that faded tattoos look really rough on old and wrinkled skin.

Sorry if I've offended anyone but am just providing my personal preferences.

There is a large population of South Sea Islanders who play in the English game and a lot of them are forwards. Their tattoos are like a 'rite of passage' thing in their culture. I know one of our lads who is a back row forward loves tattoos but wont get one done because he wants to go into PE teaching when he finishes playing rugby and he thinks it might harm his chances of finding a job. If I remember correctly there are only two of our forwards who have tattoos - one of our props who is covered in them and another of the back row forwards has one on his back and one on his hip but I think that may possibly be a tribal thing again.

Personally I have 8 tattoos (although most of mine are hidden bar one on my wrist and I'm going to have that added to soon) I've never faced any problems getting a job - my brother is covered in tattoos as well (he has two half sleeves on his lower forearms) and he's never had an issue getting a job. I work for the NHS and will be starting my nurse training soon, there has been loads of students with visible tattoos so it doesnt seem to be a problem in that field. My brother in law is a senior manager for the Civil Service and he has one of those things in his ear that stretch the lobe and it clearly hasnt impeded his job chances.

End of the day, I suppose it depends entirely on the type of job you're looking for.

One of the best nurses I know has full sleeve tattoos on both arms. I bet there are patients and relatives who make a snap judgement about him but it certainly doesn't last long once they realise how good he is at his job.
  • You'd be seriously restricting potential career paths and limiting your earning potential to average wage, I'd say.

Was at a Xmas do a couple of weeks ago - about 1000 people there. I couldn't believe how many of the women had tattoos, and how much of their skin was covered by them. I don't mind some tattoos, but a lovely sequin dress and a massive tiger's head tattoed across the back of a 21/22 year old? _pale_

I'm afraid I'm another one who's not keen on piercings or tattoos, maybe because of my age! I do feel that they are currently fashionable, but whether that will last or not, who knows! Remembering what was fashionable when I was in my teens and 20s... well it just looks daft now, but hair, makeup and clothes can be changed. Unfortunately it's a bit more difficult to change piercings and tattoos!

I have no objection to people getting them, but I personally find them ugly. (you did ask for opinions! :)) and I don't think they look professional in a formal business setting, and my pet hate, middle aged women with leg tattoos... ugh!!

No, but I wouldn't trust you to give me sensible advice on anything either.

    Sorry.

I think they'll just be seen as normal, as so many people will have them and we'll all age at the same rate!

Not many 60 year old women have tattoos now, but in 20, 30, 40 years it'll be perfectly commonplace to see a 50 or 60 year old woman with a few visible tattoos. They'll probably be seen as something 'old' and boring people have and teenagers won't bother, such is fashion!
